Woody Pop was a breakout style puzzle title developed by Sega and released in Japan in 1987 for the Master System. It was later released worldwide in 1991 as a Game Gear title.
Plot[]
Long known as the only source of magical toys, the Enchanted Mansion has had many years of joy and harmony. But it could not last. A crazed machine has shut down the toy factory and has blocked off all the wondrous rooms.
The only thing it didn't count on is the loyalty of Woody Pop - a courageous wooden toy who sets out to free the mansion from the maniacal machine.
Gameplay[]
The player takes control of Woody Pop, a block of wood with a smiley face.
The aim of the game is to break all the bricks by bouncing a ball off of Woody Pop, and richocheting it off walls. Behind Woody is a pit that players must avoid letting the ball fall into.
The types of blocks are as follows:
- Regular blocks: They come in several different colors but all break upon one hit.
- Wooden blocks: These blocks take three hits to destroy each, and will crack a little more each time the ball bounces off of them.
- Crystal blocks: These blocks can be broken to release power ups for Woody to collect.
- ? blocks: These blocks when hit will release either toy robots or soldiers that do nothing but get in the players way. The ? blocks can be destroyed however if the player picks up a diamond power up.
Hitting the Crystal blocks releases power ups, that Woody must physically touch to gain the power of. They include:
- Diamond: The ball becomes a diamond capable of breaking any block.
- Flame: The ball becomes a flaming fireball. When it hits a block, it also burns a block above and below it.
- Weight: The ball becomes heavier and slower.
- Yellow potion: Woody becomes wider, covering more surface area.
- Red potion: The ball becomes larger
- Double: When grabbed the ball splits into two, and remains so until you lose one.
- Extra Ball: Grants Woody an additional ball(equivalent of lives)
- Shot: Looks like a puff of air or a garlic, but this allows Woody to have a projectile attack that can break blocks and enemies.
- Glue: Makes the ball stick to Woody upon him catching it, allowing him to launch it at an angle of the players choosing.
- Skull: Not really a power up, this item is best avoided as picking it up increases the width of the pit Woody has to protect.
- Hammer: This item will repair the enlarged pit to it's regular size.
Additional obstacles include Toy Soldiers and Toy Robots that are released from ? blocks when hit, and a toy train that occasionally runs through certain rooms. The ball will ricochet off each of these.
After clearing out a room, the player is given the choice of which room to go to next. When all 50 rooms have been cleared, the player wins.
Trivia[]
- The Master System version of this game uses the Paddle Control, a unique Japanese exclusive wheel like controller that was turned left or right to control Woody Pop.
