Toy Fighter is an arcade 3D fighter developed and published by Sega in 1999 for the Sega NAOMI Arcade Board

Plot[]

A child is playing with their toys, making them fight to decide who is the Toy Fighter Champion.

Gameplay[]

The game utilises a unique five heart mechanic rather than a traditional two round system. Players must destroy the five hearts of their opponents in order to emerge victorious.

To do this players have a few options:

  • One heart: deplete the health bar of their opponent to take away a single heart. This is the most traditional fighting game aspect.
  • Two hearts: Using a powerful throw attack will remove two hearts instantaneously. The throws can be countered out of, and the counters can also be countered and escaped from.
  • Three hearts: Each character also has a BOMBER move; a special attack that can instantly take three hearts from the opponent. If this is used as the final move to knock the opponent out, the attack will shatter the ring. Winning a round will add a +1 Bomber to the characters stack allowing them to perform the Bomber move.

Fights take place within a floating ring that moves alongside the characters. This ring can be leaped off of for certain moves if the player is backed into it, and moves can be 'Escaped' from.

The game allows for something known as a 'Dirty' attack which allows players to get a move off before the countdown to the round has even started, although this will do weaker damage.

Mechanically the game only utilises three buttons.

Characters[]

  • Gushiken: A commando style action figure. He is a well-balanced fighter and capable of firing energy blasts from his hands.
  • Roux: A dark magician doll, she has a speedy strike and throw move options. Her bomber involves setting the enemy on fire and striking with several powerful kicks.
  • Cymbals: A large stuffed rabbit toy, who hits hard. Like his name suggests, he can utilize cymbals as a weapon.
  • Peet: A teenage boy in an animal hood who utilizes fast attacks.
  • Kaeruman: A wind-up anthropomorphic frog bath toy who wears a rubber ring around his waist.
  • Nejibird: An assembly construction toy with a bird like beak. Nejibird utilizes its unusual body to deliver unconventional attacks.
  • Hero: A superhero action figure with power wrestling-type special moves.
  • Mifune: An anthropomorphic samurai dragon doll with a broad-sword capable of unleashing strong slashes.
  • Vitamin: A magical girl-like maid doll who focuses on speedy moves and utilizes a frying pan as her Bomber attack, crushing enemies flat with it.
  • Toy King: The final boss character, stylized similar to a Diecast Gundam or a Transformer. He is the current Toy Fighting Champion before the player dethrones him.

Trivia[]

  • The game was at one point was planned to be ported to Dreamcast, but this never happened.
  • The game's stages are relatively easy until Stage 7's huge spike in difficulty against Toy King who will utilise reversals more often.
  • The disembodied hand of the toy's child will place the characters in the stages before each match and pick them up after the round is won. Occasionally they will flick the back of the toy's head to make it come to life before a fight, or give it a thumbs up for a victory.
  • The child's name might be Kevin, as a box in the closet has that name written across it.
  • A plush doll resembling(but not accurately) Sonic the Hedgehog can be seen on the floor by the aquarium before Stage 1 and Stage 5.
