History[]
Shenmue[]
Tom Johnson hitchhiked around the world, but decided to remain living in Japan selling his hot dogs alongside his girlfriend, Honey Jackson. His Japanese is far from perfect and thus he speaks in a broken accent. Honey's Japanese is far better and she tends to help him out at night.
On the night of Iwao Hazuki's murder, Lan Di's car raced down the streets of Dobuita, where upon the car almost ran over one of his customers. Tom argued with Lan Di, who simply stared coldly back at him before moving along.
Tom is good friends with Ryo Hazuki in both the game and the animation, and asks if he'd like to buy some hot dogs from him. Tom can also be seen in the harbour area selling his wares. He later gives Ryo the opportunity to learn the Tornado Kick from him.
After Ryo leaves for Hong Kong Tom also leaves to head back to America.
Shenmue II[]
In Shenmue II, Ryo recalls Tom to Shenhua Ling when talking about his friends.
Shenmue III[]
In Shenmue III, Ryo can ring Tom up in America where he will encourage Ryo to phone Nozomi Harasaki instead of him.

Trivia[]
- As everyone speaks in an American accent in the English language version of Shenmue, Tom speaks with a bizarre accent which seems to be a mix of Jamaican, Russian and Chinese to showcase he's not a native speaker.
- Tom is said to have picked up some martial arts whilst hitchiking around the globe.
