Surge the Tenrec

Surge the Tenrec (サージ・ザ・テンレック, Sāji Za Tenrekku^?) is a cyborgnetical enhanced tenrec created by Dr. Starline in the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comic universe, designed to oppose Sonic.

Appearance[]

Surge's outward design is based off of the famous 'Ashura' glitch, a glitch that would change Sonic's coloring in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

She wears 'punk' style clothing and wears metal accessories which can be useful for conducting electricity through.

History[]

Little is known about Surge's history pre kidnapping from Dr. Starline. However during her time as his hostage she and Kitsunami the Fennec were cybernetically modified using the power cores from Sonic Heroes, bio data of Sonic, Tails and Shadow, an altered Metal Virus strain to improve her overall toughness and had her memories and personality altered via study of Dr. Eggman's wooden badnik creation, Belle, during his time as Mr. Tinker.

She was placed under repeated hypnosis sessions by Starline, implanting fake memories and an artificial hatred for Sonic. Starline also performed rigorous testing and obstacle courses for Surge and Kit, which would inevitably end with the two becoming fed up at which point Starline would wipe their memories and start again, which led to the two's psyches becoming more and more fragmented.

After burning down a forest in an attempt to kill Amy Rose and demoralise Sonic as part of Starline's plan, Surge began to grow furious over wasting time with trivial tests and underhanded indirect methods and demanded she get to face Sonic for real in battle. However, she and Kit began to question just why they hate Sonic so much, which causes Starline to erase their memories once more. Upon waking up, Surge is told by Starline that she was looking forward to the 'final' test, and she believes him.

Personality[]

Her current personality is forged by Dr. Starline's consistent useage of hypnosis on her, enforcing that she hates Sonic the Hedgehog and must destroy him, seeing him as an afront to everything she (thinks) she stands for.

She is brash, arrogant, proud and overconfident in her abilities, a reflection of how Dr. Starline views Sonic himself. Surge's relationship with Kitsunami the Fennec is also a broken mirror version of Sonic's sibling like relationship with Tails, where instead of having each other's backs, Kit's entire role in their relationship is supporting Surge with it being an unequal relationship.

Over time Surge and Kit form a true bond together, and Surge begins to respect Kit a little more.

Trivia[]

Surge is the third character from the IDW comics to make the jump to video games, with Tangle and Whisper being the first, appearing in both Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash.
Surge is the second character to be based on the Ashura glitch after Scourge.
- She, Dr. Starline and Kit are all designed after in game glitched versions of Sonic, Knuckles and Tails respectively. Surge's comes from the Ashura glitch in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Starline is the Wechina glitch from Knuckles' Chaotix and Kit is a glitch from Sonic 3 & Knuckles which would turn Tails into a blue Knuckles under the right conditions.
The powers of Surge and Kit being Sonic and Tails' reversed phobias (Sonic is afraid of water(Kit's ability), Tails is afraid of lightning (Surge's ability)) was an unintentional design addition.
