Streets of Rage 4 is a side-scrolling beat 'em up released in 2020 for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows and Mac

Plot[]

It has been ten years since the fall of Mr. X and his Syndicate, and peace has been restored to the city...until now.

Wood Oak City falls under the control of a new crime syndicate rumoured to be led by Mr. X's children, the Y Twins.

Former detectives Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding join forces once again to clear save the city alongside their old partner, Adam Hunter's, daughter Cherry Hunter and Dr. Zan's cybernetically enhanced apprentice, Floyd Iraia to face off against the Y Twins and save the city once more.

Gameplay[]

Streets of Rage 4 continues the series gameplay staple of side scrolling beat em up action.

As with the original games characters are able to punch, kick, throw and use items to defeat the hordes of enemies that come their way, as well as release unleash a special attack at the cost of some health.

New gameplay mechanics were added such as the ability to regain health lost in the special attack by following up with successive follow up attacks.

Each character also has a brand new special attack in the form of Star Moves, which can be unleashed after collecting special star items found in each level.

A combo system has also been included allowing players to juggle enemies against bits of environment, granting players additional points for keeping the combo up without getting hit.

The game offers four player co-op locally, or two players online.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Streets of Rage not developed or published by Sega.
  • This is the first Streets of Rage game in 26 years.
  • This is the first time since the original game that Adam Hunter is a playable character. In Streets of Rage 2 he was a hostage, and in Streets of Rage 3 he was a NPC that helped the team out.
  • This game has the most playable characters in the series. Including the classic characters (sprite versions from past games) and the Mr. X's Nightmare DLC, the game currently stands at 20 playable characters. Streets of Rage 3 for comparison had 7 playable characters.
  • Roo, the boxing kangaroo, was one of the only playable characters from a previous game to not return as playable in this game, although he did appear in a cameo as a bartender. However he was stealthily added when the Mr. X's Nightmare DLC dropped as a secret character once again. This leaves Ash' as the only previously playable character to not return, although he was Japanese exclusive due to being seen as an offensive homosexual stereotype in the west.
  • This is the first game where Shiva is no longer a hidden playable character, but instead included in the Mr. X's Nightmare DLC.
