Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Publishing) is a long running monthly comic series published by IDW and licensed by Sega of America.

Plot[]

The story begins after the events of Sonic Forces. Sonic and his friends at the restoration have began to get the planet back to normal and are taking care of the last remenants of Dr. Eggman's army. Knuckles resigns from restoration duties to get back to his job as the Master Emerald's guardian, leaving the admin to Amy Rose.

After clearing a few towns up with Tails, Amy, Blaze, Silver and new friends Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf, Sonic is contacted by Espio whom he sent to track down Dr. Eggman. Espio reveals Dr. Eggman has lost his memories and is currently living as the benevolant Mr. Tinker, a kindly man who fixes toys and electrical items for local villagers. Sonic and the Chaotix are forced to consider their options. Punishing Eggman now he has no recollection of his past actions seemed wrong to Sonic, and after a badnik attack ends with Mr. Tinker terrified and protecting the local children, Sonic is convinced he's a changed man.

Sonic goes on to find out Neo Metal Sonic is behind the badnik attacks, having been preprogrammed to take over Eggman's mission of taking over the world in his creator's stead. Whilst Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow do battle with Neo Metal Sonic, a mysterious platypus, Dr. Starline appears at the village Mr. Tinker is staying at and kidnaps the amnesiac doctor with the aid of two mercenary skunks, Rough and Tumble.

Dr. Starline, who is a huge fan of Dr. Eggman's work, manages to revert Mr. Tinker back into his former self and pledges his allegiance to him, presenting him with the chaos emeralds in order to get on his good side. Eggman immedietly sets about creating a new plan to take over the world; the Metal Virus. Using Rough and Tumble as guinea pigs, Eggman gave them some backpack tech to help fight Sonic and Amy, telling them to only use it as a backup, knowing full well the two skunks wouldn't be able to resist.

After getting a thrashing, Rough and Tumble activate their backpacks and are doused in a metallic liquid that begins to infect them, transforming them into Zombots. Whilst Sonic and Amy managed to damage them, the Zombots simply regenerated, and touching them spreads the Zombot infection. Unfortunately for Sonic due to his way of fighting, he's already began to be infected. Realising the danger, he tells Amy not to touch the Zombots or himself lest it spreads to her. After knocking Rough and Tumble into a cavern to prevent them causing further infection, Sonic visited Tails to try and work out how to combat the takeover.

After Tails runs some tests, he concludes that Sonic's speed has been able to keep the virus takeover at bay, albeit not cure it. Realising the danger the Metal Virus could cause, Tails suggested informing people about Zombots in order to avoid the spread of infection. After almost accidentally infecting Tangle via a high five, Sonic decided to leave to confront Eggman instead and avoid accidental contamination of his friends.

Arriving at Seaside Town, Sonic comes across Vector who is being attacked by Zombots. After saving him, Vector explains he and the other Chaotix members are evacuating civilians. It turns out Eggman has dumped the Metal Virus on the kindly village that took him in as Mr. Tinker, and spreading the zombot infection whilst staying airborne above the chaos. Charmy ends up infected after trying to save a civilian who has become infected, whilst Sonic comes across Cream's house to discover Chocola and Cheese have becoming infected whilst trying to protect her and Vanilla from Zombots. Sonic teams up with Gemerl to rescue Cream and Vanilla and tells him to take them to restoration HQ alongside the other survivors.

Sonic races on to Sunset City to try and help more survivors and fight off more Zombots, making a terrible discovery that the more he touches the Zombots the worst his infection gets. Team Dark show up in the nick of time to save Sonic. Sonic warns Shadow about the virus whilst Omega engages in combat with the Zombots, unaffected by the disease as a robot himself. Shadow unfortunately doesn't heed Sonic's warnings and engages with the Zombots, getting himself infected in the process. Rouge, realising the danger proceeds to get the survivors out of there making her way in a truck to Restoration HQ, with Sonic and Omega being forced to keep the now Zombot Shadow from pursuing her. This ends with Omega being torn apart by Shadow and Sonic exhausted from his endless running and battles almost overcome by the zombots until he's rescued by Tails and Silver.

Realising there's no cure to this virus, Tails goes back to his lab in order to further research the Metal Virus. Whilst studying Sonic's biometrics, Tails ends up discovering a cure, although the data he's gathered and his lab are destroyed by a further Zombot attack. Tails narrowly escapes using the Cyclone. Sonic returns to Restoration HQ. Vector also arrive with the infected Charmy in a containment glass, unable to let his former buddy infect anyone else. The underground is overcapacity and crammed, but is at least safe.

Unfortunately an infected civilian manages to sneak in amongst the crowd of survivors, not wanting to die alone, and an outbreak occurs in the crowded room. The commotion causes the device holding Charmy to break and he escapes, attacking the refugees and creating more infected including Vanilla, who tearfully hands Cream over to Amy to protect as she is overwhelmed by Zombots. As the survivors scrabbled to get beyond the blast doors, Charmy pursued them. Taking responsibility for Charmy, Vector grabs the bee and restrains him, infecting himself, and closing the blast doors behind himself. Realising a Zombot Vector would be able smash the doors down in seconds, the group decide to move on quickly, meeting back up with Tails who realises that without the data and lab he has no hope to create a cure.

An angered Sonic engages with Eggman and Dr. Starline who have been using the egg mobile and a sound frequency to control the zombots into doing their bidding. Sonic smashes the egg mobile, whilst Eggman berates him for getting rid of the only hope for controlling the outbreak they have. Sonic demands Eggman makes a cure, to which Eggman states there isn't one.

Dr. Starline realising the problem with no cure and no way to control the zombots and Eggman's lack of care about this begins to feel a slight sense of doubt about his hero. If nothing is able to control the Zombots and there is no cure, Eggman and himself could be infected too. He begins to look into possible alternative solutions to control the Zombots looking through Eggman's past adventures. Using his Warp Topaz, Starline summons the Deadly Six onto Eggman's ship with the idea of the Zeti controlling the metal Zombots, whilst he and Eggman will use the Conch to control them. Realising what the conch was, Zazz and Zeena manage to overpower Starline and steal the conch.

Zavok proceeds to set Metal Sonic on the helpless Eggman and Starline, but Starline saves them using the Warp Topaz. Now with the Metal Virus, the Chaos Emeralds, Eggman's empire and ship, the Zeti set about taking over the world. Zavok empowers himself with a Chaos Emerald and splits the other Emeralds amongst the other Deadly Six.

Trivia[]

  • Tangle, Whisper and Surge are the first comic characters to be added into video game canon. All three appear in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash and Tangle is mentioned by name by Sonic in Sonic Frontiers.
  • The Metal Virus arc had many of the canon characters overtaken by the virus. The only ones uninfected by the arc's climax were Silver the Hedgehog (who comes from a future where the infection no longer has an effect on him), Rouge the Bat (who escaped), Blaze the Cat (who was absent during these events) and Gemerl, Metal Sonic, Orbot, Cubot and Omega who as robots could not be infected.
