Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu) is a 16-bit platformer video game for the Mega Drive/Genesis, developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It first released collectively in North America and Europe as a pack-in title for the Mega Drive on June 23, 1991. One month later it released in Japan on July 26. It is the first installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and would continue with a direct sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2. A port developed by Ancient was released for the Master System and Game Gear.
Plot[]
The evil scientist, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, travels to South Island in search of the incredibly powerful Chaos Emeralds. In his wake to locate them, he destroys the island’s wildlife and turns them into his army of robots, named “Badniks”. Sonic the Hedgehog, learning of Eggman’s plan, must stop his fiendish scheme before it’s too late.

Trivia[]
- It is Sonic the Hedgehog's first appearance in his own video game.
- The game was to originally feature a female love interest for Sonic akin to Mario’s Princess Peach, named Madonna.
- Sonic originally was in a band. This band would be seen in a scrapped version of the Sound Test. Said band had a crocodile, who would later become the character of Vector the Crocodile.
- Sonic was originally planned to be a rabbit who used his ears to attack enemies. This rabbit returns as a cosmetic skin in Sonic Superstars.
