Sonic Spinball is a 1993 platforming video game with pinball elements, released for the Master System, Game Gear, and Mega Drive. It combined pinball elements with traditional Sonic action elements and was set in the Sonic cartoon universe, unlike most other titles of the time.
Sonic Spinball was ordered by Sega management, who realized Sonic the Hedgehog 3 would not be finished to release for the 1993 holiday season. Spinball was hastily developed by the Sega Technical Institute to meet the deadline. Unlike most other games at the time, which used Assembly, Sonic Spinball was written in C. While this choice of language made the game less optimized, it rapidly accelerated development time, leading to a finished game after four months.
Sonic Spinball received mostly mixed reviews from critics, who praised the graphics and novelty of Spinball but criticized the controls.
