Sonic R is a racing game released for the Sega Saturn on November 28th,1997 and for PC in 1998. It was the first true 3D Sonic game since Sonic 3D Blast as well as the first 3D Sonic racing game. This game contains 10 playable characters and 5 tracks, as well as various race types. Unlike Sonic Drift 2 before it, this game features on foot racing instead of kart racing. The PC version is available on Sonic Gems Collection. The game is remembered for the track "Can You Feel the Sunshine?", the song which plays on the first course of the game. This song was reused in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Sonic R is available on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Sonic and Tails are about to take a holiday when Tails notices an advertisement for a "World Grand Prix". While not initially interested, Sonic notices that Dr. Robotnik is also participating in the race, which persuades him to change his mind and enter the race. It is revealed that Dr. Robotnik has recently learned of the whereabouts of the rare and powerful Chaos Emeralds, with which he aspires to enslave the world, and the World Grand Prix is actually a trap used to distract Sonic. Knuckles and Amy overhear of Dr. Robotnik's plan and decide to compete. Together, the four must balance both winning races and obtaining the Chaos Emeralds to keep them out of Dr. Robotnik's reach.
