- Three new playable characters: Mawlock, Narsha and Zuika, making for a total of 33 characters to choose from in battle

- "Star mode": Allows the game to become harder with each subsiquent playthrough.
Trivia[]
- Max is no longer a mostly mute protagonist, instead being more vocal when asked questions or spoken to.
- Party members will occasionally appear to add some flavour to character rather than remaining silent after joining Max.
- Like the original game there are no items that restore MP.
- The story of Max and Kain's origins are more blatant in the English version.
- The addition of Mawlock and his cards alleviate some of the trouble training some units. Adam, who joins late game severely underleveled can get extra turns in battle via Mawlock using his cards to give them an extra turn in combat. Doing this can allow almost all characters to level up fast.
- Characters have friendship meters. If they should die in battle the friendship levels will decrease, only being able to regained in a new game. This can lock off some of the personal character stories as a result.
- Jogurt appears more often, doing comical skits throughout before joining Max and the Shining Force.
- Jogurt also has his own ending with Max in the place of Adam.
- Unlike with the original Shining Force, levels are not transferred via promotion and thus careful thought must be put into when to promote.
- For example, Tao learns "Blaze level 3" when hitting Level 12. If the player promotes her from Mage to Wizard at level 11, Tao will not learn "Blaze level 3" until she hits Level 12 again as a Wizard.
- There are a few more hidden alternative costume items for some of the female characters alongside Tao and Anri's bikini and miniskirt hidden costume items from the original game. Khris gets a maid outfit and Narsha recieves a one piece swimsuit. These outfits have unique battle sprites.
