Segagaga (セガガガ?) is a surreal role-playing game released only in Japan for the Dreamcast in 2001.

Plot[]

In the year 2025, Sega is in crisis. With only a 3% share of the market, its main competitor Dogma (Sony) has seen off everyone but Sega from the industry and currently holds 97% of the market.

To combat this, Sega creates the project Segagaga in attempt to save the company and employs two teenagers, Taro Sega (瀬賀太郎 Sega Tarō?) and Yayoi Haneda (羽田弥生 Haneda Yayoi?), to help them reach the top of the market.

Taro Sega must reunite the development teams, unifying the warring factions of the company and get them to produce a game that will capture the hearts and minds of the people. Together, with the help of various Sega characters, Taro Sega will do his level best to tip the scales in the favour of Sega.

Gameplay[]

Segagaga is classified as a simulation RPG game.

Taro Sega must recruit skilled developers whilst keeping below budget in order to create maximum profit. To do this, he will hurl insults at the developers until their spirits are broken and are willing to negotiate a lower salary and working conditions. Failing to defeat an enemy will result in Tarō losing a month of development time which will become critical as the game progresses.

Once the developer is recruited they can be placed into one of four development group positions; director, designer, planner, and programmer. Depending on how the player places these teams they can either create a few games that take longer to produce with higher budgets that will hopefully return large profits, or turn out many quick shovelware titles in the hopes of making some quick cash to help keep Sega afloat.

The game ends after three years of development time, with the ultimate end and fate of Sega resting upon the players performance over that time.

Trivia[]

  • This is Professor Asobin's only game appearance.
  • The game was created on an incredibly small budget.
  • The promotional budget to advertise the game was ¥30,000. That is around $201/£142.[1]
  • The final boss theme (The Justice Ray, Pt. 3) is originally from Technosoft's cancelled Dreamcast game Thunder Force VI. Tez Okano, who worked on Segagaga, would later direct the official Thunder Force VI on PlayStation 2.
