Sega Race TV is a racing game for the Sega Lindbergh arcade system. The game was released in early 2008 for Japanese arcades and on 4 July 2008 for North American arcades, with a European release following in early 2009.

Sega Race TV was the last major Sega project for Yu Suzuki prior to his official departure from Sega in 2011.

Gameplay[]

The game is a fictional representation of a live-action car racing television show with comedic elements. There are nine playable characters in the game: Daryl Hawnet, Jane Kisaragi, Doug Bugster, Rita de la Rosa, Enrico Estebeth, Maria Dhyne, Cristopher Lockstone, Marguerite Miller, and Jake Paterson, the latter of who serves as the game's host. An additional character, Mike Paterson, serves as the play-by-play commentator. The nine cars in the game (all of which are convertibles) are the Ford Mustang GT, the Chevrolet Camaro Concept, the Chevrolet Corvette C3 Stingray, the Plymouth HEMI Cuda, the Mazda MX-5, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Ruf RK Roadster, the Plymouth Prowler, and the Mercury Convertible.

There are five courses in the game: Jake's World, Slip Circuit, Sunshine Coast, Rumbling Volcano, and RTV Arena. Each of the courses has a significant obstacle that is automatically activated during the second lap of the race. At some point during the third and final lap, a "Boost Bonus" is triggered in which the player can press the boost button to activate the car's booster an unlimited number of times without the meter being filled up first; the bonus lasts for 25 seconds after which it is no longer available.

This game has both single-player and multi-player modes. In single-player mode, the player competes in a series of three races against the same seven opponents. Qualification for the second race is secured by finishing in the top three in the first race, while qualification for the third and final race is secured by finishing in the top two in the second race. The prize for winning the series is an upgraded version of the car that was chosen prior to the first race; this can be obtained by finishing first in all three races. The order of the courses in single-player mode is determined randomly based on the first course that was selected. Multi-player mode is played similarly to single-player mode, except that only one race can be done at a time.

Trivia[]

  • Mike Paterson, the play-by-play commentator for the game, is a parody of Mike Joy, who is the lead play-by-play commentator for NASCAR on Fox.
