Appearance

Satan has long flowing green hair, pointed ears, a pair of golden horns that jet from his head and red eyes.

History

Madou Monogatari series

123

Satan first appears as the final boss in Madou Monogatari EPISODE II: CARBUNCLE. Here he falls in love with Arle and wishes that they get married, but after she claims that she’s only interested in the treasure known as “ruberukuraku” (the jewel in Carbuncle’s forehead), he attacks her to protect Carbuncle’s life. Upon defeat, Arle meets Carbuncle and takes him away from Satan. In Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji, Satan has a fan-club is inside his very own mansion. However, the only other members of the club are multiple Draco Centauros.

Final Exam

As a mysterious masked headmaster, Satan arranges the final exam which Arle is partaking in. When he is encountered on the 7th floor, his identity is revealed, as he forgot his mask. After his defeat, Arle must battle Rulue, who is dismayed by Arle's treatment of him.

This appearance seems to be referenced in Puyo Puyo 7, where Satan tells Ringo that he was once the headmaster of another magic school, but he doesn't think anybody else remembers.

Shin Madou Monogatari and Madou Monogatari Chronology

In the Madou Monogatari Chronology timeline, he was once known as Lucifer. He fell in love with a human mage named Lilith, and rebelled against heaven to be with her, taking his wings and his old name away. In the context of this timeline, being the creator of the rebuilt Madou World, he is one of the only major Compile-era characters to remain the same individual through all of their appearances.

Puyo Puyo (1992)

In Puyo Puyo (1992), Satan tries to make a dramatic entrance, but it is ruined when Arle mispronounces his name as "Santa." He later states that creating traps for Arle to navigate is his hobby.

The English version is the first game to change Satan's name to Dark Prince. He attempts to convince Silvana to join him; when that fails, he lays out the Black Kingdom's plan for intergalactic domination.

Puyo Puyo Tsu and Super Nazo Puyo 2

In Puyo Puyo Tsu and Super Nazo Puyo 2 he puts on a golden mask to make Arle and Rulue think he was "Masked Satan". Arle was not deceived by the lame disguise though. He had modified his tower into a rocket as a back up plan. The only way to get "Masked Satan" is to Beat the Stages without using Continues and get over 180000+ EXP.

Puyo Puyo Sun

In Puyo Puyo Sun, Satan blew up the size of the sun with magic in order to sustain a perpetual Summer and be surrounded by ladies in bikinis, including Draco Centauros, who was enjoying Satan's change in the forecast. Arle and Schezo Wegey, however, were less than impressed by his efforts, and quickly trotted of to his castle to thwart his plans.

Against Arle, he is quickly blasted by a Fire spell of hers, while Schezo uses his sword not to cut him down, but to singe off his hair, to which Satan laments the fact that he now has a bald spot. In Arle's ending, he's knocked out cold: in Schezo's ending, he beats up Schezo, much to the latter's discontent.

Puyo Puyo~n

Throughout Puyo Puyo~n, Satan was brainwashed by Doppelganger Arle after he accidentally released her from a black box in order to obtain Carbuncle and battle Arle. He was freed later by Arle and can't remember anything for what he did. For the first time, he is only the penultimate opponent and not the final one.

Puyo Puyo Box

He sets up a chase for Arle in the Quest mode. He spreads 6 medals needed to enter the Happy Tower across the land. Once Arle has assembled them, he reveals himself as the grand prize of the Happy Tower and is the final boss, as usual. Arle rejects his offer for marriage, and he is also abandoned by Carbuncle as usual. In Scramble mode, he either fights with OPP rules in 10 man mode in his Tsu outfit, Yon rules in 20 man mode with his Yon design, or Tsu rules in 30 man mode as Masked Satan. He is always the final opponent.

Minna de Puyo Puyo

In Minna de Puyo Puyo, Satan was once again after Arle's love, so he crafted a ticket for two to a fancy hot springs made of gold and splits it into five runes. Arle was sent on a wild chase to recover these runes and find Carbuncle, who had wondered off to Satan's Castle. After Arle recovered the runes and pieced them together, she threw away the ticket, wondering why anyone would invite her to the hot springs, and leaves Satan to cry.

Puyo Puyo! 15th Annniversary

In Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, Satan joins the tournament in order to use his wish to force Arle to go on a honeymoon with him. However, he mistakenly wishes to teach the magic school students some manners instead, much to the dismay of Satan. He is implied to be one of the six meteorites in the game's intro.

Puyo Puyo 7

Satan becomes one of the playable characters in story mode who can fight Dark Arle. He is also one of 3 characters (not counting Skeleton T's transformation) whom hardly changes at all when transforming in Puyo Puyo 7. The dialogue even jokes at this, when Suketoudara tells Satan that a rumor states he doesn't change at all. Only the length of his horns and the color of his wings change. In the DS version, other minor changes in tint can be seen as well.

He appears in the Area 51 stage in Act 3. With Ringo and Amitie mistaking him as an alien (with Amitie calling him Stan at one point), he accuses them as brats, and tells them they deserve a trip to Puyo Hell, and challenges them to a Puyo match.

When Ringo is warped to Primp Town, Satan hears the commotion between her and Arle, and joins Ringo in freeing her from Ecolo's mind control, meeting Maguro and Risukuma along the way. He later joins the main trio in the final battle with Ecolo.

Satan's Story

In Others' Stories

Puyo Puyo!! Quest

Satan is available as a green card in this game, added on November 28 2013. He is available in Magic Stone Gacha in limited periods only. He is in the same series with Strange Klug, Accord and Ecolo, having similarly distributed skills and stats.

During the Holy Night Present Festival event from December 20 2013, Satan receives an alt named Santa Satan, seen with a Santa Claus outfit. This alt is also available in Magic Stone Gacha in limited periods only.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

As Satan is explaining why the two worlds are colliding, He is immediately blamed for the worlds colliding by Arle, after which he engages in battle with her as punishment, and loses. Eventually he is found again by both Ringo, and Tee, the latter of which he gets hostile at by the mere mention of being Arle's friend. Eventually after a brief battle, He begins a rematch out of pure anger, but is immediately calmed down by the return of Arle, and after explaining the situation to her and her friends, stays behind to help rebuild Primp Town. At the ending of the story, He and Ecolo create a portal from the edge of spacetime to their S.S. Tetra, allowing the Tetra's crew to be able to visit Ex at anytime.

Puyo Puyo Chronicle

At the beginning of the game, he is whisked away by an unknown force. This turns out to be something of his doing much later into the adventure, and he is among the final characters to join before endgame alongside Ecolo, Onion Pixie, and Lagnus the Brave.

Miscellaneous

In Puyo Pop (N-Gage), his sprite is used for the Gatekeeper, the final boss who presumably guards the exit of Puyoland.

In a Disc Station animated short, Satan wakes up to find himself tied up and in a Puyo Puyo game. He jumps off when a pair of Puyos bounce towards him, and just as he lands safely in the Puyos, a pair of red Puyos connect with another two in the field, starting a chain that leads to an All-clear, ultimately making Satan dropping to the bottom of the playing field.

Trivia

  • Satan is replaced by Dr. Robotnik in Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, King Dedede in Kirby's Avalanche, and Spirtl in Qwirks.
  • According to Kazunari Yonemitsu, director of Madou Monogatari 123 and one of the creators of Puyo Puyo, Satan and Schezo Wegey were modeled after characters from the novel Night's Master. While not explicitly confirmed, Satan was almost certainly based on Azhrarn, the Prince of Demons. Coincidentally, one potential translation of the book's Japanese title is "The Dark Prince".
  • Although his characterization seems to have changed in recent games, Compile-era’s Satan used to love “Carbuncle-chan” obsessively, having his castle decorated with Carbuncle goods everywhere and owning countless Carbuncle dolls (Madou Monogatari SS, Puyo Puyo~n, Puyo Puyo Box, Hasamuncho), and often being distracted by Carbuncle rather than Arle (Arle's Adventure, Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon) or wanting nothing from her but that she return his pet to him (Arle Manyuuki).
  • Alternate voice notes:
    • In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, his voice become a bright and strong tone.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris, his voice become a high, calm voice. There are a lot of changes in chants compared to other characters.
      • In the English version, he speaks in falsetto.
    • In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, he is whispering.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Satan's alternate voice is similar to the one heard in the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, though he sounds slightly more energetic.
      • In the English version, most of his alternate voice clips are reused from the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, and his new voice clips retain the same tone.
