Sakura Revolution (サクラ革命 Sakura Kakumei?) was a tactical RPG mobile gacha game released on iOS and Android exclusively in Japan. It launched December 15, 2020, but was shut down July 20, 2021 due to financial issues.

Plot[]

In the year Taisho 84 (1995 CE), disaster struck the capital in a calamity known as the Great Imperial Capital Disaster. The nation was able to rebuild and recover, thanks to the discovery of a new energy based on spiritual power, known only as Mirai.

Sadly, with the activation of the New Imperial Tower, the cherry blossoms stopped blooming. Moreover, demons known as “Koki” began to increase in number, lashing out to attack people across the nation. To protect the people, the government formed the Great Imperial Combat Revue B.L.A.C.K., who protect the people from evil while bringing light to their hearts with unmatched live performances.

While peace reigns among the people thanks to Mirai and B.L.A.C.K. and many have put their trust in the government, some have come to realize that it is but a false prosperity.

These brave souls are known as the Imperial Combat Revue, and their mission is to uncover the government’s conspiracy and retake Japan![1]

Characters[]

  • Captain Ohishi: The player character, they are in charge of the newly appointed commander of the Imperial Combat Revue. Ohishi is on the run from the government and B.L.A.C.K. Whilst Ohishi is depicted as a man in the OVA, the player had the option of picking a male avatar (known as Yoshitaka Ohishi) or a female avatar (known as Yura Ohishi). Captain Ohishi is said to have special eyes by Nadeshiko Sakura that grant them the ability to see weaknesses in the Koki's defences.
  • Shino Sakura: An earnest 16 year old girl who lives on the Izu Islands. She is the daughter of Nadeshiko Sakura a legendary actress and member, but has been raised by Nadeshiko's co-star Kirin Aoshima. Shino is a cheerful, somewhat clumsy and clueless girl who has spent most of her life watching her mother's stage plays and practicing swordsplay to the point she can best the Koki in combat with her swordsplay alone. When her island comes under attack she pilots her mother's Koubu spiracle armor, accidentally getting it destroyed in the process and ending up with the prototype for what would become a spiracle dress.
  • Fuuka Aoshima: A super genius mechanic at age 16, Fuuka is Kirin Aoshima's granddaughter raised alongside Shino. She's well aware of her mechanical skill, and gets really excited to be able to work on a Koubu. When Shino is summoned to the capital to help fight in the war, Fuuka goes with her to join the Imperial Combat Revue's Aogashima Division as their mechanic.
  • Asebi Mikohama: The third member of the Imperial Combat Revue's Aogashima Division in Sakura Revolution, Asebi is a 16 year old actress who views Shino as her rival. Determined to shine brighter than her rival on the stage, she trains herself to perfection. She defects to B.L.A.C.K. by the end of Chapter 1's episodes.

Other media[]

A 23 minute fully animated short was released as part of the advertising campaign. This short features Captain Yoshitaka Ohishi being sent to the Izu islands on a mission from Nadeshiko Sakura alongside a Koubu in order to recruit her daughter, Shino Sakura into the war against the Koki.

Reception[]

  • Sakura Revolution was a financial disaster. Whilst initial interest in the title started off promising, the drop off in the playerbase was enough that it was brought up in an official shareholder meeting.
  • The game cost SEGA over 3 Billion yen to make but only scraped back 70 million yen in the first month.
  • The iconic kobu designs were altered to allow players to be able to view the characters faces. This was a controversial decision which broke the fanbase.
  • Due to the time setting, no previously established Sakura Wars characters appear, as most the games previously took place in 1920, whilst this game is set in 2011. This decision also didn't sit well with previous fans of the series.
  • The new characters also recieved harsh criticism, being described as "ugly" by disgruntled fans.
  • Further criticism from fans noted the similarities in UI and design to Fate/Grand Order, another gacha title by Delight Works, seeing it as a cash grab.
  • Despite this, the game did garner at least 1.5 million users over it's lifespan.
