Riela Marcellis (リエラ・マルセリス Riera Maruserisu ) is a major character in Valkyria Chronicles 3. She is Number 13 in Squad 422, the Nameless.
Appearance[]
Riela is a young woman with long red hair that gradients out into the Valkyria silver. She wears some of her hair in a side ponytail, adorned with a black ribbon, whilst her squad uniform consists of a red skirt, dark brown gloves, a black blazer and white undershirt, black and red thigh high stockings and knee high brown boots. Around her waist she wears a belt with a pack fastened to it where she keeps her good luck charms and a corset.
History[]
Originally found abandoned in a tiny Gallian village, Riela was raised by a kindly elderly couple. Her grandmother taught her to take great pride in her speedy ability to heal, crediting it to Riela drinking milk every day to grow up strong. Riela was seen as an outcast by most of her village due to her strange appearance, with some even fearing her for it. Around the same time the second Europan War broke out, Riela's grandmother passed on. Realising there was no reason to remain in a village that showed disdain for her, Riela signed up to the Gallian Militia to help her fellow countrymen defend Gallia.
Unfortunately through a series of unfortunate events Riela ended up being the sole survivor in five different squads who were wiped out, earning her the nickname of The Angel of Death. Being seen as a jinx, she was transferred to Squad 422, AKA the Nameless, as a way to get rid of her and prevent her endangering any additional squadrons.
Her nickname had unfortunately been heard in Squad 422, who were often sent on suicide missions and thus many of the members kept their distance from her. During a mission with herself and the commander of the squad, he was killed in combat yet again, further driving a wedge between her and her team mates, and causing her to blame herself for his death.
When Kurt Irving, transferred a few days later, a jumpy Riela immedietly held a blade to his throat not recognising him and having been put on edge by the recent demise of their commander. Fortunately Gusurg, one of the few who interacted with Riela, explained the situation to her, and she became apologetic, embarrassed about her behaviour. To make up for her actions, Riela put herself forward for the first mission Kurt was placed in charge of, making her, Imca and Gusurg the only members willing to give Kurt a chance in command. The mission was pulled off successfully, but Riela kept her distance, afraid she'd get Kurt killed by simply being around him.
Later as Kurt slowly began to garner the trust of Squad 422, Felix Crowley and Giulo Rosso stated whilst happy to follow Kurt they had reservations about working alongside Riela due to her reputation. Riela is hurt by this and continues to keep her distance. Kurt, who wishes to get Riela's trust as well, approaches her and asks about her nickname. Riela reveals the former deaths, and Kurt tells her that their deaths were not her responsibility just because she happened to survive. Riela still blames herself for the former Nameless Commander's demise. Kurt sets up a mission with Riela to prove to both her and the other members that she is not a walking jinx. Thanks to Kurt's strategic planning, the mission is a success, and the others begin to treat Riela as a fellow soldier. Overcome with happiness, she thanks Kurt with tears streaming down her face, revealing her name to him as a sign of trust.
Riela begins to support Kurt fully, helping in any way she can. When the squad are assigned a mission where they must travel through a minefield, Kurt devises a plan to obtain the maps from the Imperials who set the mines up. When they debate the legitamacy of the maps, Kurt is about to state he'll walk through the minefield to test them. Riela immedietly volunteers, stating her body is naturally tough and that with her bad luck stigma if she survives it, it means any can. She makes it through safely, reporting in, and between this act and her overall sincerity she wins over her fellow Squad members even more.
Later during an assassination mission from Gallian HQ on Ghirlandaio to try and take Prince Maximillion's life and cut short the war, Riela witnesses the terrifying power of the Valkyria by witnessing Selvaria Bles unleashing her fury upon Squad 422. Kurt gives the order to retreat and they all set about fleeing into the woods. Now seperate from the rest of her allies, Riela begins to fear they have died, but manages to snap herself out of it.
She approached by the Imperial scientist whilst alone in the woods Clementia Förster who states she has no need to harm her, but is a researcher that is interested in her. She tells Riela that she can help her find out who she truly is and hands her a Valkyria lance and shield to hold. Riela takes these, and her body begins to react to these ancient weapons. Her hair turns completely silver, but she suffers immense pain whilst undergoing the transformation. Förster suggests that her awakening might be incomplete due to Riela previously awakening a little bit, and is disappointed she's already exhausted. She gifts Riela the weaponry and states that Riela can at some point help her achieve her dream of witnessing two Valkyria fighting against one another before leaving. Riela is left alone, scared and rejecting the power, fearing what Kurt will think of her, but takes the weapons anyway.
Later Squad 422 are labelled as traitors and the Gallian Army are ordered to hunt them down. In order to save everyone from their pursuers, Riela uses the lance and shield activating her Valkyria powers, deflecting several bullets and even a lancer mortar with ease before blasting the side of a cliff face down giving them time to escape. Imca, who had her village eradicated by Selvaria, is overcome with anger and attacks Riela, believing her to be the monster who killed everyone in her village. The two clash, but Riela, unable to harm Imca closes her eyes allowing Imca to overpower Riela, knocking her flying into a cliffside and out cold. As Imca is about to strike a killing blow, Riela is saved by a gunshot from Kurt which deflects Imca's Vár, and gets Imca to calm down.
The following day everyone is shocked by Riela's Valkyria powers, but grateful to be alive thanks to her. Imca makes up with Riela, apologising for her attack and that she now realises Riela is not her enemy. To make up for it, Riela is given time to rest as the rest of the Squad fight off pursuers to allow her body time to recover.
Other appearances[]
Project X Zone[]
Riela is transported to Marvel Land alongside Kurt, making their appearance in Chapter 13 where they arrive in the summoning circle to be greeted by Valkyrie. They originally intend to hide their true names, using their numbers, but Valkyrie who overhears them accidentally blurts out their true names anyway. Riela demonstrates her Valkyria power to her new allies, which impress some of them, but others believe the power is nothing compared to their own abilities.
Chain Chronicle[]
Riela appeared as a limited time recruitable soldier in Chain Chronicle alongside her team mates Kurt Irving and Imca. She is an archer type unit and can transform into her Valkyria form.
Personality[]
Riela is a kind and caring young woman always looking to be helpful. She cares deeply for her comrades and is incredibly friendly and outgoing, but due to her reputation as 'The Angel of Death' having been the sole survivor of five other squads, she has been ostracised by the other members of the Nameless before Kurt arrived. Having spent her life ostracized for either her reputation as a jinx during her time in the army, or by her village as a young girl due to her unusual red and silver hair appearance, Riela places a lot of importance on the bonds she does have. She is extremely thankful to Kurt who helped Squad 422 get over their fear of her by proving she wasn't bad luck and quickly made friends with those who allowed her to do so.
Riela can also be quite naive and superstitious herself, putting her ability to heal fast down to her drinking milk, her favourite snack, which her grandmother attributed to her naturally tough body.
Powers and abilities[]
As a Valkyria, Riela's body heals much faster than regular humans. In her full Valkyria form she becomes essentially invincible to all types of damage, such as interception fire or landmines and tank shells. She is also able to unleash the energy of refined ragnite through the lance and shield, turning it into a highly destructive force of energy.
