Popo is depicted in his first appearance as a very young fairy boy clad in a simple green t-shirt and shorts made of some grassy material. His hair is short and he wears a small hat made of wrapped up blades of grass. He wears a golden pendent around his neck and wears a tiny satchel at his waist. He is bare footed.
He later grows out his hair, wears a darker green jacket top over his shirt, and swaps his shorts for some longer pants, that have a white trim. His hat is slightly altered to be two long leaves with the "ties" being visibly leaf like. His eyes are slightly smaller indicating he's gotten older.

Mushiking: The King of Beetles[]
Popo is a fairy living in the forest. One day whilst hanging out with his beetle friend, "Mushiking", the pair came under attack from a large aggressive beetle neither had ever seen before, brought to this forest by men from a distant land. It's eyes glowed red, it attempted to attack Popo, but fortunately Mushiking stepped in to protect him. Popo gives coaching advice from the sidelines to aid Mushiking in combat.
After Mushiking successfully defeated the attacking beetle, the creature asked for forgiveness from "Mr. Adder". A man cloaked in a blue robe appeared and refered to the creature as useless. Popo recognised this man as Adder, a fellow fairy capable of magic who had been expelled from the forest. Popo demanded to know if Adder was the one controlling the insects. Adder told him to go home and get out of his way, before setting several more beetles on the pair.
Mushiking once again fought them off, and Popo pleads with Adder to stop as he was destroying the forest. Adder, furious at being expelled from his home, decides to take over the forest and show all the fairies that the forest now belongs to him. Popo suggests that the forest is for everyone, but Adder shoots him down telling him to be quiet and to give up. He summons more of his obedient beetles to attack the pair. Once again, Mushiking is too strong for these invaders and manages to best them in combat. The final beetle pleads with Adder to not have his body modified anymore.
As Popo kneels next to the defeated beetle, Adder comments he underestimated Popo, believing he was just a child. Popo demands to know what Adder has done to these beetles. Adder reveals he operated on them to make them obey him as loyal servants. Popo, appalled, states the insects are their friends not their servants to which Adder screams at him to shut up and that his time is over, summoning a hercules beetle to fight Mushiking. Once more, the foreign beetle is defeated. Popo tells Adder he has no more insects and he should give up. Adder smiles and reveals that the reason the forest is full of alien insects and is being destroyed is because of man. He reveals man will soon arrive, more foreign insects will invade and the peaceful forest was now a thing of the past before disappearing with magic.
Popo, determined to put a stop to Adder tracks him down. He decides he cannot allow Adder to cause any more damage to the forest and eventually finds him in a scary looking tree where he is making modifications to the beetles he has enslaved. Adder sets his two newest creations on Popo and Mushiking but they are both defeated. Adder attempts to flee with his magic once more, but Popo isn't falling for it again and tackles Adder to the ground, wrestling his magic staff from his hands and shatters it against the hard floor of the tree stump they're fighting in, destroying Adder's escape route.
Afterwards Popo locked him up in a cage where he couldn't hurt anyone anymore. Popo thought that was the end of the problem, but when he returned to check on Adder, the cage had been broken and Adder had escaped. He overhears an injured beetle and runs over. It's a Mandibularis Stag-beetle who is badly injured. The insect reveals it was the one who broke Adder out, but not through his own volition. Adder has a whistle that can control nearby beetles, and forced it to injure itself by smashing the cage. It begs Popo to get away as it's taken over once again by Adder and forces Mushiking to intervene. After being defeated, the insect begs Popo to finish him off in case he loses control again. Popo states he cannot bring himself to do that, calling a Swallowtail Butterfly over instead who scatters it's scales, restoring the insect to normal.
To show it's gratitude, the Mandibularis Stag-beetle flies Popo to Adder's new hideout, another spooky tree. Popo busts through the door to discover Adder sitting on his throne and tells him to stop his evil plans. Adder, who has a new magic staff, sets his beetles on the group again. The Mandibularis Stag-beetle begs the mind controlled bugs to not fight for Adder as he's using them, but is tossed aside by a Caucasus Beetle. Popo tells Adder he won't get away with this, but Adder sets the tree on fire, before mind controlling the Manidbularis to attack Popo.
Popo yells at Adder asking does he plan to burn the whole forest down, but Adder doesn't care if it doesn't belong to him. He leaves Popo being cornered between the flames and the Mandibularis, leaving the tree and locking them both inside the burning tree. As Popo is forced to defeat his former friend, the tree begins to collapse around them. Popo falls landing on a branch on the way down and is disheartened to see the forest has caught alight. Just as he despairs, Mushiking arrives. Popo wants to inform all the other fairies and beetles so they can escape, but Mushiking reassures him that he's let them already know. Adder is setting fire to everywhere. Mushiking tells Popo they must fight Adder to put a stop to the forests destruction.
They fly to the stump Adder is continuously shooting fire from, and a battle between the beetles Popo has rescued and Adder's mind controlled minions begins. Popo tells Adder he won't forgive him for burning the forest down, and his team eventually wins. Popo snaps at Adder that it's over, but Adder attempts to mind control Mushiking. Mushiking however refuses to give up, stating he's here to protect the forest and tackles Adder into the flames below as Popo watches in disbelief at Mushiking's heroic sacrifice.
