Phantasy Star Universe is the first part in the "Gurhal" series of the Phantasy Star franchise. The game is both a console MMO and a single player Action RPG with a full-length campaign that spreads across the Gurhal system, a solar system in similar vain as Algo.
The main single player story Ethan Waber, a 17-year old GUARDIAN who must adventure across the solar system in order to save world. The game features a secondary story mode where the player can customize their own character.
On November 20, 2007, the game received an expansion pack called Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus

The game features four playable races, known as:
- Human - Human's are good with all wepons and are good at any class.
- Newman - Newman's are very good with magic and so are recommend to be a force and are weak at hand to hand combat and are bad hunter's.
- CAST
- Beast - Beast can go beast mode in battle and are great hand to hand fighters. They are great hunters but bad forces.
