Penguin Land, known as Doki Doki Penguin Land: Uchuu Daibouken (Thump Thump Penguin Land: Great Outer Space Adventure) in Japan is a puzzle game created by Sega released in 1987 for the Master System.
Plot[]
Three fragile penguin eggs are lost on a distant planet. Penguin Mission Commander Overbite's mission is to retrieve these eggs and safely get them back to the penguin space crew whilst avoiding the alien polar bear named Gangow who wants nothing more but to crush the fragile eggs.
Gameplay[]
As a direct sequel to Doki Doki Penguin Land, the game mechanics of dropping your egg down levels of ice whilst avoiding polar bear enemies remains in tact.
As before, Overbite can roll the egg, peck ice to make it crack, jump atop the egg to dislodge it should it get stuck and push and drop stones atop the polar bear opponents. Ice can only be pecked when below and on the square directly in front of the one Overbite is standing on.
He can also now activate falling bolders from below by jumping into them, allowing them to fall and be pushed into polar bear enemies or used for platforms to safely get the egg down.
Should Gangow get to the egg, he will jump on it, breaking it. Stone blocks landing on the egg will also break it, and players must pay attention to the white line indicating the safe drop distance for the egg when rolling it off platforms.
If Overbite doesn't push the egg for too long, a condor like bird called a Cameel will fly by attempting to drop a brick on the egg to shatter it, although this can be countered by Overbite simply moving the egg out of the way fast when it appears, or leaping into the brick to block it.
New to this version are special pipes that allow either the egg or Overbite to travel safely down to the next level, however the pipe will only let one of them down depending on the symbol on it.
Other new additions include a cracked ice block that the egg will fall through after a second and crushing stone pillars as obstacles.
Trivia[]
- This title came with a level creator allowing players to make their own levels. This was a rare additional mode back in the day.
