Pengo is an arcade maze puzzle game published by Sega in 1982.
Gameplay[]
The player controls Pengo, a red penguin as he attempts to defeat every Sno-Bee enemy on the map.
To do this, the player must crush the Sno-Bees with blocks of ice by pushing them into them, stunning the wall if they're next to it or crushing blocks with unhatched Sno-Bee eggs hidden inside them.
Ice blocks can only be pushed into free spaces. If a second block of ice is behind the ice block Pengo is trying to push, he will instead break the ice block with his beak.
If Pengo can crush multiple Sno-Bees with a single ice block push he is awarded additional points.
Over time Sno-Bees will become blobs with increased speed that are capable of crushing multiple ice blocks, taking away Pengo's ammo.
Trivia[]
- The theme music for the game is Popcorn, an instrumental piece by Gershon Kingsley, a pioneer of electronic music.
- There is a minigame in Segagaga based on Pengo, where Taro Sega must load Dreamcasts into a truck by pushing them similarly to Pengo. Even the music sounds similar to Popcorn.
- Being one of the earliest successful arcade titles, Pengo inspired dozens of copycat clones that all consisted of penguins pushing blocks of ice. Some titles include Pengi, Pingo, Pengon, Penguin-Kun, Pengwyn, Percy Penguin, Pango, Petch, Pilot et Pingo, Igloo, Iceball, Iceblock, Hopper, Charly Pinguin, Chilly Willy, Frostbyte Freddy, Push Push Penguin, Pengoric and The Penguin Dance.
