Masayuki Fukuhara (雅之福原 Masayuki Fukuhara, born August 6th, 1960) or Fuku-san as he is more commonly referred to by Ryo Hazuki, is a live-in student at the Hazuki Residence where he learns Martial Arts from Iwao Hazuki. He is slightly older than Ryo although despite this he doesn't seem to be as skilled, and a little clumsy at times.

Appearance[]

Fuku-san is always seen wearing his martial arts uniform.

History[]

On the day of the incident, Fuku-san was in the Dojo with Iwao when Lan Di arrived. Early on in the confrontation, Fuku-san is thrown out of the Dojo just as Ryo arrives, after this he passes out. As the days and weeks go by and Fuku-san comes to know what Ryo is trying to do, although Fuku-san thinks it's dangerous, he agrees to aid Ryo in whatever way he can. Even giving him his life savings so that Ryo can buy a boat ticket to Hong Kong. Fuku-san does slip up though, by telling Ine-san that Ryo is going to Hong Kong because Iwao's killers are there, despite this he does mean well and does want to help.

As Ryo is finally able to leave Japan for Hong Kong, he asks Fuku-san to take care of the Dojo for him which he, of course, agrees to.

Fuku-san also has a crush on Akemi Sato, the hostess at Bar Yokosuka. He frequently drinks there just to be near her. Before the incident, he came in quite often, but his grief and depression have prevented him from coming by recently.

During the events of Shenmue III, Ryo can call Fuku-san. Fuku-san gets excited when Ryo talks about the martial artists he's met in Bailu Village, and states he wants to train in the same place that Iwao and Ryo trained. He also talks about the Phoenix mirror and Lan Di with Ryo.

Fuku-san will also reveal that he and Akemi were dating during the period between Shenmue and Shenmue III, but he was dumped just before Ryo's phone call in the third game. Ryo will attempt to comfort him by suggesting either training, drinking or travelling. Training will depress Fuku-san, but the other two will make him react more positively.

Trivia[]

  • Fuku-san was practically raised by Iwao Hazuki since he was 15.
  • Fuku-san shows a great interest in travelling with Ryo in Shenmue III, wishing to visit the same place Iwao trained in Bailu village, and travel with Ryo around china.
  • Should the battle with Chai end poorly for the player, Fuku-san is the one who will show up at You Arcade and cause Chai to retreat with his presence.
  • Fuku-san can be trained against in Hazuki Dojo at certain points in the story. This is the only way for Ryo to practice throws.
  • There's an achievement attached to sparring with Fuku-san. Although players will need to spar against him twice to trigger it.
  • If Ryo is struggling with some parts, Fuku-san will often appear to aid Ryo by giving the player clues, such as how to find the Phoenix Mirror, where to find a flashlight, how to solve the dojo's puzzle, locating Warehouse number 8, regarding finding Master Chen or finding a photo of Iwao and handing it to Ryo.
