Lord of the Sword is a 1988 Master System action adventure/role-playing game.
Plot[]
The Kingdom of Baljinya is under attack. An evil band of foul creatures has murdered the king and his family, with plans to revive their leader, the Demon Lord Ra Goan, allowing him to take the crown and make him the ruler of the kingdom.
The Elders of Baljinya know only a strong and brave man could possibly save the country from Ra Goan and his followers, and therefore decree that any man who can pass three daring tests will become the new King of Baljinya. The tests are:
- Find the Tree of Marill, the symbol of the royal family.
- Subdue the Goblin of Balala Valley.
- Destroy the Statue of Evil.
Players play as Landau, a mighty warrior vying for the crown and rule the land that he loves.
Gameplay[]
Towns within Baljinya contain NPCs that can heal Landau if he talks to them each time about how to advance in the story. Talking to the same NPC over and over will occasionally wield different results allowing Landau to gain new information to help advance the plot.
Leaving town will allow Landau to enter an action stage, where he can fight his way through the monsters in the wilderness on his way to neighbouring towns.
To defend himself Landau has a sword and a bow and arrow, although he cannot walk and use the weapon at the same time. Both the sword and bow have upgrades that Landau can equip as he progresses.
Players only have a total of ten continues to complete the game.
Trivia[]
- Strangely for the genre, there are no stat increases or upgrades, nor money obtained from defeating monsters and enemies.
- Unusually, after Landau defeats the final boss, the game does not end. He must make his way back out of the final dungeon, fighting his way through the monsters that reside within it AND back through the wildnerness to the town area in order to finally claim his rightful place as king.
