Let's Go Island

Let's Go Island: Lost On the Island of Tropics is a Sega arcade game that was released in the mid-2011. It's a sequel to Let's Go Jungle!: Lost on the Island of Spice.

Plot[]

Taking place in the Pacific islands, our protagonists, a laid-back New Zealander guide called Zack and a snappy Canadian girl called Beth are interrupted while on a boat tour. While on the tour, their boat collides with another boat belonging to a group of local pirates who are attempting to run away from a shiver of sharks. Both of the pirates and tourists go overboard as our protagonists, two of the pirates, and the boat driver remain. Beth and Zack are then given automatic guns by the pirates in order to help fend off the sharks. After successfully shooting away the sharks, the boat capsizes and the pirate, Beth and Zack all go overboard. Beth and Zack quickly take hold of a rope attached to the boat as they continue to run and shoot at the sharks and other aquatic enemies. Eventually, the rope is cut and they make their way towards the surface and attempt to get back to the boat. Suddenly, the boat is crushed by a gigantic octopus which then sets its sights on our protagonists. A boss fight begins against this octopus, yet it stops when the boss's health bar reaches it's halfway point. They have to quickly use a windsurf board in order to escape from the giant octopus. After fighting the octopus, Zack gets an idea on how to dupe and escape but fails to communicate the plan to Beth much to her chagrin. They maneuver the windsurf board over waves, cliffs, and ditches the board in order to land safely from the water, as the octopus instead hits its head against the island's cliffs. Beth is miffed about how her vacation has taken a turn for the dangerous while Zack remains very lackadaisical and turns their focus to follow a plane seen overhead so that they can go back to the island resort they are supposed to be staying in. In order to get to the air terminal, they need to follow the plane while traversing the abandoned island resort that they are now navigating.

Players are then given a choice between 3 different stages to play between the abandoned resort's golf course, the hotel resort itself, or an underground cavern's night club. In these stages, Zack reveals that he is a New Zealander and used to work at this now ditched vacation spot before being dropped due to the resort having gone under, Beth reveals that she's Canadian, and in all 3 stages the pair loses their guns and have to resort to using other items as a means of self defense. In the golf stage, both take turns combatting away giant lobsters with hitting golf balls. In the resort stage, they use bottles of soda water that's reserved for newlywed couples to defend themselves against giant carnivorous tadpoles. In the night club stage, Beth uses maracas and Zack uses a guitar to fight against giant flies as they raise themselves out of the club in the cavern. They then need to keep their balance after being thrown off the basket they were using as they exit the cavern properly.

Regardless of which level they chose, our protagonists make it to the plane that they were following. They are welcomed aboard by the pilot, but he assumes that they are the pirates as he's their getaway flier. But the plane gets attacked by a giant bee queen. They then find another automatic gun and are able to defend themselves from the giant bee. They attack the swarm of bees, then focus on the queen herself while fighting the masses she spawns, then focus on the bees that help her fly. Finally, with no swarm or guards to protect her, players focus their fire on a rapidly rolling queen bee. After defeating the queen, she bumps into the plane, which knocks them off back onto the island. They must jump off a cliff in order to avoid being squashed by her, which is then followed with a quick time event in order to dodge branches and jagged rocks so that they can use a paraglider to get to safety.

Onto the final level, Beth and Zack are kidnapped by the pirates with AK-47 assault rifles, and are coerced to dive in the water to retrieve the treasure they have been searching for. They are looking for a tube which is said to contain some form of treasure. Zack and Beth are facing off against the sharks again, shooting at them much as they did in the first level. They then fight against a myriad of huge aquatic life such as anemones, starfish, jellyfish, sea cucumbers, and stingrays. They are then guided by a dolphin to a sunken ship. The dolphin has guided the players to their friend who was trapped by a fishing net, which is being leered at by the same giant octopus from the end of the first level, back with a vengeance. Another quick time event begins with the players needing to button mash to lift the net to rescue the dolphin's friend. The giant octopus swings at where the protagonists and dolphin were, which uncovers and reveals the silver tube the pirates wanted, the treasure. The octopus squirts its ink at the players, which then initiates the other half of the boss fight with the beginning having the screen be covered in ink. Then the octopus launches squids at the player much like missiles. Finally, being guided by the dolphins and having hit it's weak spots, the octopus is defeated and the pairs make it back to the boat, treasure in hand.

After retrieving the treasure, the silver container that was said to have jewels reveals that there was nothing but junk in it. The pilot had lied to the pirates, which sends the leader into a fit of rage having been deceived. Zack finds a still functional lighter in the tube and keeps it, much to Beth's annoyance. The pirate's leader kicks a Green Leaves barrel in his rage, which is filled with strange chemicals, into the sea. These chemicals react with the giant octopus that was defeated earlier, reviving the monster and mutates it with the nearby ocean life making a proper sea monster. Zack gets and idea and they use the boat's machinery in order to combat against the monster with a quick time event. The dolphins from earlier arrive next to the boat, offering their help to the pair as mounts in order to combat the monster. The monster then uses half of the boat and the falling debris to fight against Beth and Zack. The sharks come back and are quickly fended off by the pair. They then need to fight against some of the barnacles that adorn the monster's exterior. The monster quickly grabs both players as they then shoot it's "teeth". The monster then sneezes as it launches both Beth and Zack away from itself.

They come crashing into the water next to the pilot from earlier, who has landed in the water due to the scuffle with the queen bee earlier. Zack observes that the monster is spewing oil from it's mouth and muses if the pair had some fire, that they would be able to defeat the beast once and for all. Zack asks if the pilot had any more weapons, but he reveals that he dropped everything. Zack starts to give up, declaring that "its over." Beth firmly believes that "its not over" as she asks that Zack were to guide them out of this situation as he had every previous problem they have had since the beginning of this journey. This gives Zack his confidence back and they pair climbs onto the seaplane. They find some fireworks that was in the plane's cargo, and the pair gets an idea. With Zack using the lighter from the silver tube and Beth wielding one of the fireworks, they fire one last time at the monster. This is the final quick time event.

Depending on if the players were able to successfully time the event, the game has split endings. The endings are dependent only on this quick time event. The split between the bar ending and the good endings happen depending if the players were successful in the final QTE. For the bad ending, the firework misses, but the monster goes to chase it instead of pursuing the pair. For the good ending, they are successful and the firework blows up in the mouth of the Monster, raining gold and treasures in its wake. All endings start with Beth and Zack have a conversation, reminiscing on their journey together.

In the bad ending, Beth reveals that she went on vacation to find herself and claims to have found something else. Zack presses her on what this something else is. Beth grows mad and exclaims that she found nothing, claiming in her rage that Zack ruined everything. She then demands to know when the pair are getting back to land as Zack grimaces at her yelling. Zack, equally miffed, says that they will get back to land when Beth pays him for his extra services in guiding them and combatting the enemies. They are both not happy with each other. a heart forms between them, which is shortly broken as two sharks attempt to leap to its shape, instead colliding with each other down the middle. The heart then splits and falls into the ocean.

In the good ending, Beth reveals that she went on vacation to find herself, and claims to have found something else. Zack presses her on what this something else is. Beth says that she found Zack, proclaiming him as her "guide through the rest of my life!". Zack is touched and asks "Don't you mean partner?" and holds her hand. A heart forms between the two, as the dolphin pair from earlier leap out of the ocean following the heart's pattern.

In the best ending, the same conversation from the good ending occurs. Instead of Zack asking his question, he instead takes off Beth's glasses and tosses them into the ocean. We then see Beth's face without the glasses. The conversation continues as Zack asks his question from the good ending, and the pair leans into each other as they embrace. A heart forms between the two, as the dolphin pair from earlier leap out of the ocean following the heart's pattern.

When credits roll there are two different kinds you can get. In the good ending, the pair are seen relaxing back at the proper island resort. In the bad ending, Beth is seen relaxing alone at the beach. In both endings, Ben and Norah, the couple from the first game Let's Go Jungle! Lost on the Island of Spice, can be seen walking by as Ben is using a map and Norah follows. Two different songs are used for both the good and bad ending credits.
