Jet Set Radio, known as Jet Grind Radio in the North America, is a game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Dreamcast. It centres on the exploits of various gangs of rollerbladers embroiled in a graffiti tag-related turf war.

Plot[]

DJ Professor K runs an underground pirate radio show known as Jet Set Radio as he commentates on a turf war between gangs of 'rudies'; runaway deliquents with a love of rollerblading and tagging walls with their grafitti. The GG's, are one gang of rudies who compete with rival gangs The Noise Tanks, Poison Jam and The Love Shockers for territory.

Whilst defeating the rival gangs, they notice rudies are being stolen away by well dressed men in mysterious black cars, looking for pieces of a record that can apparently summon a devil.

Gameplay[]

In each mission, the player is dropped in a specific area of the region whose missions they are trying to beat and instructed to tag a number of spots with graffiti.

These spots are indicated with large red arrows and are therefore usually quite easy to locate, but may be difficult to actually reach. After collecting spray cans from various places in the level, the player can then 'tag' a particular spot by using the L button when they draw near or skate past.

Yellow spray cans are worth one spray, blue spray cans are worth five each and red spray cans recover health.

After the first few tags, the police show up, usually led by Captain Onishima. As the player covers more and more of the landscape in his or her gang's graffiti, the police presence escalates further and further, often ending in tanks or rocket-firing helicopters charging onto the scene.

Along the way players will be challenged by other 'Rudies' who will challenge the player to complete their mission in order to unlock them as a playable character. Upon beating the challenge, the character will become a member of the GG's and be available for all missions afterwards. Players start with only Beat as a playable option, but are challenged by both Gum and Corn before the end of the tutorial giving players a starting roster of three.

Players can be awarded more points for tricks performed, allowing them to unlock 'Jet' ranking. In doing so players can unlock other non GG members to play as.

Setting[]

The game is set in a fictional variant of Tokyo, called Tokyo-to, specifically the downtown areas of Shibuya-Cho, Kogane-Cho and Benten-Cho, also including 2 more areas in Grind City, known as Bantam Street and Grind Square.
