Holosseum is a two player fighting game released in arcades by Sega in 1992. It uses holographical technology to make the fighters appear to be floating in a 3D space.

Gameplay[]

Players pick one of four characters, all of whom use realistic martial arts. Unlike many other fighting games at the time there was no additional fictional abilities such as shooting fireballs or spinning propeller kicks.

Characters:

  • Dompayagen: A Muay Thai warrior
  • Dave: A Karate Shihan expert
  • Chen: A Chinese Wushu Master
  • Garrison: A self taught mixed martial arts expert

In Single Player once a character has been chosen, they will be set against the other three fighters before fighting the 'World Champion' who will be a recolored version of the player character. After this they will be given 'Extra' fights against any of the four characters at random.

Trivia[]

  • This was the first fighting game to attempt a realistic depiction of a mixed-martial arts contest.
  • The display works because of a concave mirror inside the cabinet, which reflects a specially framed image produced on a standard monitor. As a result of the mirror, the focused image appears as if it is floating in mid-air allowing for a holographic feel.
  • Due to the way this game's hardware works, the backgrounds needed to be completely black to pull off the illusion.
  • As an additional obstacle, due to the way the technology worked, the framed screen is very small meaning the fighters have very little stage to play on.
  • This game was released as a conversion kit for the only other holographic arcade game to use the same cabinet, Time Traveler as the laser discs in that game were unreliable.
  • This was the second and last game released for SEGA's hi-tech hologram theater cabinet.
