Background[]
In 1985, at the age of 20, Goro Majima was a member of the Tojo Clan's Shimano Family, and was sworn oath brothers with Taiga Saejima. Together they had been chosen by the Dojima family to carry out a hit on Ueno Seiwa. Majima was given a bag containing six pistols for him and Saejima to use. Majima expressed concern for Saejima's sister, as it was likely they would both either targeted or imprisoned. Saejima for his part put it down to bad luck with a shrug.
Later, just before the hit, Majima was told to call the hit off, which he refused as Saejima was already on his way and there was no time to contact him. Majima went to join Saejima, but was overpowered by Kazuo Shibata's family members and captured. Unbeknowst to both Majima and Saejima, the entire hit was a set up orchestrated by Shibata and Isao Katsuragi, and the pistols were loaded with rubber bullets. Saejima carries out the hit and is given a life sentence for 18 counts of murder.
Majima meanwhile is put in 'The Hole' a room used for torturing yakuza members, designed to break the spirit of the losing his left eye in the process. Majima went on to resist torture for a whole year without begging to be killed.
In 1986 he was handed over to Shimano's oath brother in the Omi Alliance, Tsukasa Sagawa. Here he was put into the role of manager at Osaka's The Grand cabaret club and told if he could make them 100 million yen, he would be reinstated as a Tojo Clan member.
Yakuza 0[]
In 1988, Majima has helped The Grand flourish, earning himself the nickname around town as "The Lord of the Night". Despite thriving as a Cabaret Club manager thanks to his charisma, he is deeply unhappy, unable to strike back at the aggressive drunks that visit his establishment and fearing Saejima may break out of prison at any moment to come kill him for not showing up for the hit.
To make matters worse, just as he makes his quota, and expects to be reinstated as a Tojo Clan member, Sagawa raises the quota from 100 million yen to 500 million yen. Majima, furious, attempts to attack Sagawa, but knows it won't help his situation. Sagawa gives him two options; to carry on working at The Grand and make that 500 million yen quota, or to carry out a hit that will clear his debt immediately. Majima, having spent two years working for seemingly nothing, takes the hit job, although Sagawa warns him that murder can never be taken back regardless of whether it's a saint or a sinner.
The hit's target is Makoto Makimura, who Sagawa informs him is a ruthless pimp who targets college girls, forcing them to work for him through the Telephone Club. Majima is given two days to carry out the hit, and sets about going to the Telephone Club to try and get some leads on Makimura.
He manages to connect with a college girl through the Telephone Club posing as a writer who wants to do an article on Makimura, and takes her on an expensive date to earn her trust using the charismatic people skills he's built up working at The Grand. She eventually tells him more about Makimura, but the description she gives doesn't fit the one from Sagawa. Makimura here is spoken of as a saint who saved the lives of dozens of girls from creeps and sex slaves, and only ever asks for the occasional errand run. Majima, deeply confused, steels himself to carry out the hit regardless, and is taken to a massage parlour, where Makimura is meant to work using his God Hands.
When he arrives he finds the massage parlour is empty, and as he's about to leave a young woman comes in. Realising she's blind, Majima attempts to leave but the phone rings, causing her to crash into him to try and answer it. Upon bumping into him, she screams believing him to be a robber, but Majima pretends to be a customer to reassure her, eventually getting himself into a situation where he's forced to let her massage his back to calm her down. As he relaxes, Makimura arrives and realises Majima is here to kill him. He sends the girl out for cigarettes, not alerting her to the danger and after she leaves they fight to the death.
During the fight, several yakuza break into the massage parlour, with both Majima and Makimura believing they're with the other. The Yakuza are here to kidnap and kill Makimura, and ask where they are and laugh when Makimura tells them he is Makimura. Whilst Majima is confused, the blind woman returns. It turns out she's actually Makoto Makimura, and is kidnapped. The large man who claimed he was Makimura is actually Wen Hei Lee and is shot in the leg by the intruding Yakuza. He tells Majima to go save Makimura, which a confused Majima ends up doing, defeating her would be kidnappers and dragging her to safety. When alone, Majima pulls the knife out to finish Sagawa's hit but his conscious will not allow him to kill a blind woman, instead vowing to keep her safe.
Confused, and trying to make sense of everything, Majima hides her in a garage in The Grand's rival, The Odyssey's lot. He asks her why everyone is trying to kill her, and she tells him to find Lee, who will explain her story. Majima heads back to the massage parlour, but Lee is no where to be seen. A short chinese man comes in, and Majima, on edge, holds him at knife point and asks who he is. He is a doctor, and is here to pick up Lee's clothes. Lee is staying at his hospital, hidden inside a Mahjong parlour. Majima knocks him out and heads to the parlour to meet Lee.
Lee seems to be expecting him, and invites him to sit at the Mahjong table with him as they discuss Makoto's safety. Lee can tell Majima hasn't killed her as he has the face of someone who is on the edge of stepping into murder, but not having actually done it. Majima warns him that he hasn't decided whether he'll kill Makoto or not, changing the atmosphere of the room. The doctor returns, bringing with him back up, and Lee let's Majima fight them since he's still possibly his enemy. After Majima bests them in combat, Lee tells him of Makoto's past; how she was kidnapped by a man with a bat tattoo and sold to the Korean mafia as a sex slave, which in turn made her go blind from trauma, but he doesn't believe the man with the bat tattoo could be involved in the hit due to him being too small time to be able to utilise the yakuza. Lee has a plan for how Makoto, Majima and Lee can all get out of this situation alive, but asks if Majima is ready to do whatever it takes. Majima, without any options, agrees to this and they plan to meet up later.
Majima goes back to where Makoto is stashed away and gets her some Takoyaki. She is relieved to hear Lee is alive, and the two begin talking with Majima telling her a bit about his past too. He notices a watch on her wrist and asks why she has it, as she's blind. Makoto keeps it as a memento of the past, but says it's silly as there's no practical use for it, removing it. Majima tells her it's not silly at all, and pockets the watch for safekeeping.
Majima heads back to The Grand to avoid suspicion from Sagawa, but is notified by one of his waiters that a Chinese man is here to see him. The doctor has arrived to pass over a message. He tells him that Lee said to leave The Grand and head home, and Lee will tail him and meet him there. Feeling bad about beating the doctor up, Majima states he'll fit his drinks bill, and promptly leaves. No sooner has he gotten a foot out the door when Makoto's would-be yakuza kidnappers turn up. Majima fights them and defeats them, but Sagawa has seen the whole thing, and asks for an update on whether he's found Makoto Makimura yet. Majima lies, and tells him he still has time on the job. Sagawa agrees, and let's him head home.
Upon arriving at home Majima is met by Lee who talks about how many eyes are on his apartment. Majima reveals he's not allowed to leave the city, and these eyes are on him for unrelated reasons to Makoto. Lee tells him that he'll need to go into the massage parlor and use his secret passageway to shake the tails on him, as Sagawa's men are always watching Majima, and they'll meet up where Makoto is hidden. Majima slips into the massage parlor, finds the hidden passageway behind the bookcase and meets with Makoto, who is holding an envelope given to her by Lee just before Majima arrived. Majima opens it and finds it is full of photos of a woman. When Lee returns with some drinks, Majima questions him what the photos mean. Makoto passes out on the sofa, Lee having spiked her drink, and explains he doesn't want Makoto hearing the next part.
The woman in the photo is a marriage fraudist and all of her partners end up mysteriously murdered. He mentions she is a perfect body double of Makoto too. Lee's plan is to murder this woman, and use her as a body double in Makoto's place, allowing Majima to not look like he's betrayed his boss, and to keep Makoto safe from that point on when her enemies think she's dead. Majima, disgusted, refuses, and the two get into another fight with Lee not wanting anyone who knows the plan to leave the room alive if they aren't in it together. Majima defeats Lee, and without any more ideas, leaves to go back to work at The Grand.

- Majima is a big fan of zombie movies.
- Majima appears alongside Kiryu in Project X Zone 2.
- Majima is a playable character in the Streets of Rage inspired Yakuza spin-off Streets of Kamurocho.
- Majima's birthday, May 14, was assigned to him so that he and staff member Masayoshi Kikuchi share a birthday.
- Majima ranked 1st place in the fan favorite characters poll. According to Sega, this is due to him being comic relief.
- Majima's given name, "Goro," is associated with the numbers 5 and 6 in Japanese because they can be pronounced as go-ro.
- Two of his shotguns in Yakuza: Dead Souls are called the "MJM56 Crazy Dog" and "MJM56-55 Exorcist".
- One of the possible Majima Everywhere encounters in Yakuza Kiwami has Majima attempt to scam Kiryu out of 560,000 yen with a cheap drink. While calculating this cost, he mutters to himself, "Five for the go... Six for the ro..."
- He starts off with 56,000 yen in Yakuza Kiwami 2's Majima Saga, and one of the DLC items, "Majima’s Maji Bun," gives Kiryu +5600 health recovery and +560 experience in every category.
- When the Majima Thought Entity is defeated in the Final Millennium Tower in Yakuza: Like A Dragon, it drops 5,656,565 yen.

- Majima mentions that he has a spotty memory and often forgets things, like why he's left the house or what he was meant to buy while out shopping. In Dead Souls, a note from Nishida states he constantly forgot the combination to a safe installed in the Majima Family office and claimed to not be able to remember his own cell phone number.
- Majima's backstory between 1985 and 1988 has an inconsistency. In Yakuza 4, The Florist of Sai stated that Majima found and brought Hideki Sasai to Purgatory circa 1985 several months after the failed Yoshiharu Ueno hit. Majima could not have done this due to the fact that he was immediately captured, locked up and then tortured for a year after the hit, then made to work for Tsukasa Sagawa in Sotenbori until the events of Yakuza 0 near the end of 1988.
- Majima's Kansai accent, while consistent throughout most of the series, drops briefly the day before the Ueno Seiwa massacre in Yakuza 4. Saejima scolds him for his accent slipping, and Kazuo Shibata compliments him on his accent getting better, hinting he only picked up the accent recently at that point.
- He also does not use the accent in the beginning of Chapter 3 in Yakuza 0, for his cabaret manager persona.
- Majima's Breaker style can be briefly used before it is actually unlocked by the player in Yakuza 0, via the second fight of the substory The 10 Million Drug Test.
- The boss Meowjima in A Hat in Time's Nyakuza Metro DLC refers to the Majima setting.
