Flicky is an arcade game made by Sega. First released in arcades in 1984, Flicky was also released at the time for the SG-1000, and then ported to the MSX and Japanese computers Sharp X1, Fujitsu FM-7 and NEC PC-8801. It was later ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991. Flicky was designed by Yoji Ishii, who was with Sonic Team until August 1999, when he formed Artoon, his own company.

In Flicky you control a small blue bird on a single wraparound level with only the ability to run side-to-side and jump. Levels consist of platforms, Chirps, Tigers, Iggys, telephones, flower pots, cups, and bottles. The objective is to collect all the loose Chirps and bring them to the exit goal. The Chirps follow Flicky in a chain until they are collected at the exit, awarding bonus points for bringing multiple Chirps back. There are a total of 48 stages, each with a time bonus.
Chirps that are following Flicky can break off if they come in contact with Tigers or Iggys. These enemies can be defeated with throwable items such as telephones, flower pots, cups, and bottles. Flicky can pick up an item by walking into it, and throw it by jumping. Diamonds provide bonus points.
Inbetween each level is a Bonus Round. Simply walk from side-to-side to collect the Chirps in your net. Collecting all Chirps will grant a PERFECT BONUS.
Re-releases[]
Flicky has since been re-released as part of the Sonic Mega Collection for the Nintendo GameCube, Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 where it was an unlockable extra game, and in Sega Mega Drive Collection (Sega Genesis Collection in North America) for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. It has also been released for mobile phones.
Flicky next appears in Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection in North America). It can be unlocked by playing 30 times of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and by using a save file of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
Trivia[]
- The game can be seen advertised on the walls of You Arcade in Shenmue.
- The titular character later became a reoccurring character and face of a species in Sonic the Hedgehog series.

The Flicky mini game in Gunstar Super Heroes.
- Gunstar Super Heroes has a section of the second stage, Moon 1, in which the player must collect Chirps and guide them back to an exit door as a reference to the original Arcade classic. However, there are 16 Chirps to collect in this section and the map "rotates" unlike the arcade game.
