Endless Dungeon is a dungeon crawling 'Rogue-Lite' tactical action game with tower defence mechanics. It was created by Amplitude Studios and released on October 19 2023.
Story[]
The game starts with a three man space craft being pulled towards a station out of their warp bubble, causing it to crash land into the station. The crash kills the Ambylr co-pilot and after killing a single bug monster, the pilot is killed as the ship's hull collapses. The remaining survivor, a nervous young man known as Sweeper, takes the gun of his killed comrade and ventures into the station.
Here he meets up with a boistorous woman known as Zed who takes him through the basics; they need to get their small robot known as Crystal Bot through the maze like dungeons in the Station in order to find a way to escape. However, it won't be easy as the dungeons are crawling with monsters, deadly robots and other horrors who want to tear the Crystal Bot apart. As the Crystal Bot is paramount to their survival, this is not a good thing.
Sweeper learns how to use turrets, medkits, elemental weaknesses of the foes they encounter, but before they can progress the Crystal Bot is destroyed with the resulting explosion obliterating both Sweeper and Zed.
Much to Sweeper's surprise, he is not actually dead, and instead is transported alongside Zed into a location known as 'The Saloon' via a revival machine known as the 'Reloader'. Everyone within the saloon has been stranded there, but with the Reloader reviving those lost in the dungeons, Zed alongside her helper, Bunker, have been exploring the dungeons and transporting the Crystal bot...and dying and reviving a lot. But with Sweeper's help, Zed believes they'll manage to make it out of this endless nightmare.
Gameplay[]
The goal of the game is to get the Crystal Bot safely through the dungeons to the exit. If Crystal Bot is destroyed, the characters will be killed and reloaded into the Saloon.
Much like with other Endless titles there are a few key resources:
- Food: Can be used to upgrade heroes stats, and can be transformed into medkits
- Industry: This resource allows for the construction of buildable objects such as turrets, generators and shields. These can be placed on the build points to help defend from waves.
- Science: Can be used to unlock more powerful weaponry at research terminals
- Dust: Rare, this valuable resource can be used to light up darkened rooms.
Every time a door is opened within the dungeons, a few of these precious resources(outside Dust) will be generated. They will also open new rooms which will hopefully lead to the exit of the stage, treasure chests that contain new weapons and items or if unlucky monster spawn locations.
After discovering a monster spawn point, every door opened has a chance at causing a wave of monsters. Researching new weapons can also trigger waves of monsters. Occasionally blackouts will also occur causing endless waves of monsters until the heroes interact with two reset points on the map to fix the issues.
The monsters themselves have specific elemental strengths and weaknesses which the heroes will need to juggle the weaponry of to progress:
- Bugs: Weak to fire, resistant to acid
- Bots: Weak to electricity, resistant to light
- Blobs: Weak to acid, resistant to electricity
- Blurs: Weak to light, resistant to fire.
Once the exit is found, players will need to get Crystal Bot to open the exit door. Activating Crystal Bot will cause endless waves of monsters to appear as it slowly wakes up, makes it way through the dungeon and to the exit door room, which will take a period of time to open up. The heroes must keep Crystal Bot safe during this in order to progress.
Along the way there are bosses, each of whom is an upgraded version of one of the four core monsters, and share the same strengths and weaknesses.
Upon the team making their way to the very lowest level they'll encounter Eriaudy, a shadowy creature that can spawn waves of other monsters, the ability to power down rooms making turrets useless, and attacks capable of one shotting heroes. Defeating Eriaudy means making it to the core reactor successfully.
Heroes[]
At the time of launch, Endless Dungeon has eight heroes to choose from, although the player will initially only start with Sweeper, Zed and Bunker as options. By reaching new locations, other characters located around the Saloon will be unlocked and join them.
Each Hero has three abiliites:
- A passive ability that is always active
- An active skill which takes a short time to charge up
- An ultimate skill which takes far longer to charge up but can change the flow of the fight
Each hero also has their own individual quests to be done during the dungeons which will unlock hero chip slots, upgrades that will increase your heroes abilities, as well as cells which are used to purchase the hero chips and the occasional skin.
On the 20th June 2024 a new hero that had been co-created with the Amplitude Studios community via voting, Viggie, was released as part of a free update.
