Cool Spot is a 1993 platform game, developed by Virgin Games USA, and a 7 UP tie in product. It stars 7 UP's 1990's mascot, Cool Spot, an anthropomorphized version of the red spot on the soda company's signature logo.

Plot[]

Cool Spot, an anthromorphic red spot from a bottle of 7 UP, is looking to free his fellow Cool Spots who have all been caged.

Gameplay[]

Cool Spot is a platformer that involves running (technically strutting), jumping, and firing out soda bubbles in all directions to defeat enemies that vary from hermit crabs to mice throwing cheese to toy robots.

Cool Spot must traverse 11 worlds, bouncing on soda bubbles, jumping from balloon to balloon, climbing and clinging onto surfaces, collecting red spots to increase his 'Cool Meter' and reaching the caged Cool Spots at the end to free them.

Unlike many platformers, Cool Spot doesn't have boss battles at the end of each stage so Cool Spot needs to simply make it to the cage.

After freeing his allies, providing Cool Spot 85% coolness in the 'Cool Meter,' he will enter a bonus stage inside a giant 7 UP bottle where he can bounce around, picking up additional bonus points from red spots and floating 7 UP logos alike, as well as grabbing letters that will spell 'Uncola', a word the company used to describe their drink in the 90s, which will provide him with continues.

Development[]

Reception[]

Cool Spot was generally well received, with many praising the art of the game.

Trivia[]

  • The original mascot for this game was to be 7 UP's Fido Dido.
  • Cool Spot is based off the red circle in 7 Up's logo, and was their mascot in the late 90's.
