Clockwork Knight 2 is the sequel to Clockwork Knight on the Sega Saturn.
Plot[]
The game picks up immediately after the ending of Clockwork Knight.
Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III (or Pepper for short) has rescued the love of his life, Chelsea, but she is unable to wake up from her slumber. Without her being able to sing her special song at midnight, the toys will cease to be able to come to life. Whilst Pepper and his rival Ginger ponder about how best to wake her up, the unknown force that kidnapped Chelsea in the first game arrives and kidnaps her once more!
Pepper and Ginger decide to split up; Pepper will save Chelsea, whilst Ginger deals with the mysterious foe behind the kidnapping.
Gameplay[]
Gameplay remains largely the same from Clockwork Knight, with Pepper able to attack with his key sword or pick up and throw items to defeat enemies but with a few additions:
- There is now a few sections where Pepper will ride on the back of his faithful steed, Barobaro. Rather than attacking with Pepper's key sword, these sections have you attack using Barobaro's springy head.
- There are now racing segments against Ginger's valet Le Bon, a bouncing ball. Beating Le Bon will net Pepper a golden key which gives Pepper an extra life, though failing will only reward Pepper a single Imperial Crown.
- Pepper can now collect playing cards from each level. There are four in every one and collecting them will net him a golden key.
- The US version adds a mode called "Bosses Galore" which pits the player against each boss from both Clockwork Knight games, and allows the player to choose between Pepper and his rival Ginger. Ginger attacks much faster than Pepper, runs much more quickly, and can double jump.
Trivia[]
- Both Clockwork Knight titles were released together in a single game called Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro as a Japan exclusive.
- The Bosses Galore mode is exclusive to the US release of the game, and doesn't appear in either the Japanese or European versions. This is because the US version is built upon the Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro compilation, which released after the EU and JP versions of Clockwork Knight 2 did.
- Two months before the game's release, SEGA ran a Clockwork Knight "Trap Idea" Contest in Japan's SEGA Saturn Magazine, urging readers to come up with traps, enemies and gimmicks for this game. Five winning entries had their ideas included last minute in Clockwork Knight 2.
- In the US version, Ginger can be played as by entering Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left Right, L, R, L, R on the game mode selection screen (though the overworld and HUD still shows Pepper's face). There are a few quirks, though; the player must fight Crazy T.V. (who is not present when playing as Pepper) before starting the game proper, the Barobaro sections revert Ginger back to Pepper (but turn you back into Ginger after being cleared), and cutscenes are not shown.
