Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III ("Pepper" for short) is a toy wind up soldier. He is in love with the Clockwork Fairy Princess, Chelsea, whose voice wakes up the toys of the house every night at midnight.
But he is clumsy and something of a laughing stock, especially when compared to his friendly rival Ginger who is also after Chelsea's heart.
One night Chelsea is stolen away by an unknown force, which also hypnotizes some of the lesser toys to become fierce minions and stand in the way of anyone who would try to rescue her.
If there is no voice to wake them up anymore then the toys will never live again, so Pepper and Ginger head off to find Chelsea before it is too late.
Gameplay[]
Clockwork Knight is a traditional side scrolling platform title that took advantage of the Saturn's graphical capabilities at the time, focusing on pre-rendered 3D sprites similar to the technology used for Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country and polygonal environments, making this title noted as visually impressive at the time of launch.
Pepper is capable of attacking with his key which his wields like a sword, and is capable of picking up stunned enemies and throwing them. He also is capable of pushing and pulling blocks and other items, picking up and throwing toys such as footballs to attack. There's also a power up that when collected makes Pepper invincible, capable of running through enemies.
To increase his health bar, Pepper must collect cogs which act as health points. He starts with three cogs, but this can be extended.
The game has four rooms Pepper must traverse; Betsy's room, Kevin's room, Kitchen and Attic, each containing two levels and a boss fight at the end, with a total of five bosses and eight levels.
Collecting crowns within the levels can be spent to gain extra continues(20 required) or gambled in a mini game, Soltia Roulette, to gain even more crowns or extra lives.

Clockwork Knight difficulty was changed to be harder for American and European gamers due to perceptions that these regions preferred more challenge in their games than the Japanese market.
This game was called Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Daibouken Joukan in Japan, with Joukan translating to 'First Volume'
Clockwork Knight and it's sequel were released together in a single game called Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro as a Japan exclusive.
