Burning Rival is a 1993 fighting arcade game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega. It was released exclusively in Japan in July 1993.
Gameplay[]
Burning Rival is a one on one fighting game where players compete for the best 2 out of 3 matches in order to be declared the victor. In arcade mode the player must defeat each of the main characters (including themselves) with the exception of Shingen who must be defeated twice as he doubles as the game's boss.
Characters[]
- Arnold A Karate Master who is seeking stronger opponents. Having accidentally killed his master in battle, he attempts to honour his teachings by overcoming all challengers.
- Asuka A ninja who is travelling the world searching for her missing brother and former ninja arts training partner.
- Bill A well known American Football player who became a henchman for the syndicate. He is currently battling to pay the syndicate off and allow him to go back to a normal life with his wife and daughter.
- Craze A thug and fight enthusiast from a gang who is attempting to reaffirm himself as the strongest around.
- Jackson A kick boxer aiming for the top. If he can become the champion he will finally marry his fiancee, Elly.
- Mr. Chin A Kung Fu master and chef who plans to use the prize money to expand his Chinese restaurant.
- Santana A masked wrestler. He continues to fight in order to pay for a life saving operation for his sister, Lena.
- Shingen The ghost of the samurai Shingen Yagyu who was killed by a dirty trick that entrapped him. His soul, angered by his dishonourable defeat possessed his helmet and armour. His spirit cannot move on until he feels he has defeated all challengers fairly. If he wins the tournament his soul is finally released to heaven, and his armour put on display in the museum.
Development[]
It was the first fighting game developed by Sega AM2; however, Yu Suzuki wasn't involved in this work. It was created during the fighting game trend of the 1990s that began with Capcom's Street Fighter II. Despite the arcade game showing highly-detailed, cell-shaded anime-style graphics and animations by Zero-One Ltd., as well as a sense of humor, it didn't catch much attention and was never ported to any home console.
Trivia[]
- Development text found in the game's code seems to indicate the game may have been designed using Arabian Fight as a basis, as both the name of the game and the playable characters names appear.[1]
- Asuka appears as a scorecard girl in the Switch Sega Ages.
