Book (ブック Bukku) is the protagonist of the Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (and it's remake) as well as a supporting protagonist in Monster Boy in the Cursed Kingdom.

Appearance[]

In Wonder Boy in Monster Land he is depicted as having curly blonde hair, a suit of armour and a red and white headband.

In Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap he is depicted with spiky blonde hair and a blue suit of armour with a star on the chest plate and a blue tiara.

In Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap his hair is coloured green and he wears a red scarf around his neck.

History[]

Book was a resident of Wonder Land, a vast land blessed with beautiful forests and oceans where the inhabitants live happily, when a ferocious dragon known as MEKA arrived leading an army of monsters with it, transforming it into 'Monster Land'. Soon the citizens were living their lives in fear of the creatures.

Book, unable to stand this situation any longer thought to himself "I can not stand it any longer. I'm going to defeat the dragon and return back our peaceful life again!" and set off on a journey to vanquish MEKA.

Book ends up fighting MEKA, discovering the dragon is actually a robotic dragon from outer space during the fight. Just as Book slays MEKA, it places a curse upon him transforming him into a lizard man. Book, now appearing as a monster, travels across the land, seeking the Salamander Cross, the only item that can lift the curse. To do this he must slay other dragons across the land, with each bestowing upon him a new curse turning him into a lizard man, a mouse man, a piranha man, a lion man and a hawk man.

Eventually Book defeated the Vampire Dragon, obtaining the Salamander Cross and lifting his various curses. Human again, he returned home with promise that tales of his heroic actions would be passed down from generation to generation.

Trivia[]

  • Book is the most reoccurring Wonder Boy protagonist, although he is also the one with most identity crisis;
    • The English manuals refer to him as Tom-Tom, and the hero of the original Wonder Boy game
    • Ryuichi Nishizawa is coy about the connection, but mentions that Tom-Tom was Sega's name for the character, and he originally called him Bocke. [1]
    • Book is referred to as simply "Wonder Boy" in Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. His early concept art seems to resemble his official artwork closer, but the final matches the sprite from Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.
    • In Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Book and Tom-Tom are shown to be two separate characters. The Wonderboy Collection also features art of both characters as separate individuals.
