Beat (ビート Bīto?) is the main protagonist of the Jet Set Radio series. He is a laidback rudie who is a member of the GG's in the franchise. Beat, along with Gum, are usually used to represent the Jet Set Radio series in crossover titles, with Beat making more appearances than any other character from the JSR series so far in external media.

Appearance[]

The most reoccurring design features of Beat are his reddish-burgundy hair, big headphones, sunglasses, and inline skates. Between each variation of him, some details are changed such as his glasses' lens. His main color scheme is orange and black, but in Jet Set Radio Future it was neon-green and black instead.

History[]

Jet Set Radio[]

Beat is a street punk 'Rudie' runaway who enjoys rollerblading and spraying graffiti tags all over town. He is a major member of the GG's and one of the founding three alongside Gum and Corn.

Beat, Gum and Corn proceed to get involved in a tag war with their rival gangs; the Love Shockers, the Noise Tanks and Poison Jam all of whom want to take over the GG's territory and make it their own. Along the way Beat must also avoid being caught and apprehended by the police and their leader, Captain Onishima.

Jet Set Radio Future[]

In Jet Set Radio Future, Beat is shown as a somewhat arrogant rudie who, whilst not the leader of the GG's, as this game takes place in an alternate universe from the first one, believes with time he will become it. He is not unlocked from the start, but is the first GG to be recruited. Gum is not initially a fan of Beat in this title referring to him as a 'headphone wearing freak' who has been 'creeping into their territory' to Yoyo at the start of the game prior to Beat's recruitment. He also comes off as standoffish to any of the GG's that approach him initially asking them what they are looking at when approached and challenges them to a race for the GG's territory if he wins. Upon losing, Beat joins the GG crew and warns the current GG to escape to the HQ as the cops are on their way.

Other appearances[]

Sega Superstars series[]

Sega Superstars Tennis[]

He appears in Sega Superstars Tennis as a playable character. He is a speed character with his All Star move spraying the opponents side of the court with graffiti, causing them to trip when moving around the court.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing[]

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Beat drives a Tokyo-styled street racing car and his specific levels inside Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing are Shibuya Downtown, Rokkaku Hill, and Highway Zero. Beat's All-Star Move is called "Tag Jamming". He gets out the car and back on his skates as he goes around spray painting the opponents on the track momentarily leaving graffiti on their screen.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed[]

Beat also appears in the sequel Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. In this game his All-Star move has him blast out music beats that hit anybody nearby.

Sonic Forces[]

Beat's clothing also cameo as a costume for the playable Avatar in Sonic Forces.

Sega Heroes[]

In Sega Heroes, Beat is a playable red rare hero who was added on October 15, 2018. He has the following gameplay characteristics:

Trivia[]

  • Beat is considered the leader of the GG's in Jet Set Radio, but Jet Set Radio Future has Corn as the leader and founder of the gang instead. Beat mentions it's only a matter of time before he is the leader which is a reference to his original status.
  • Beat is the poster boy for Jet Set Radio appearing on both covers of the games and being the character with the most cameos from the series.
  • Despite being the poster boy, Beat is replaced by Yoyo as the starting GG in Jet Set Radio Future. Instead, Beat is the very first recruitable GG (making him the fourth playable character after Yoyo, Gum and Corn).
  • The Kanji on his shirt reads ビ-ト which translates to his name in Japanese ビ-(Bii) ト(To)
  • Beat was to feature in the cancelled mobile game Sega Blast Heroes alongside Gum, Alex Kidd, Amigo, Sakura Shinguji, Selvaria Bles, Ulala, Tom-Tom and others.
