Beat is main protagonist of Jet Set Radio series. He is a 17-year-old member of the GG's in Jet Set Radio and is also the first recruitable character in Jet Set Radio Future.

Appearance[]

Beat is a short young man with short reddish burgandy hair, a large pair of green lensed sunglasses with a sound wave design on the front of them, oversized headphones and large rollerblades upon his feet.

His clothing varies from game to game, but he tends to wear black gloves, sometimes fingerless ones, dark coloured jeans with a belt and a t-shirt.

History[]

Jet Set Radio[]

Beat is a street punk 'Rudie' runaway who enjoys rollerblading and spraying grafitti tags all over town. He is a major member of the GG's and one of the founding three alongside Gum and Corn.

Beat, Gum and Corn proceed to get involved in a tag war with their rival gangs; The Love Shockers, The Noise Tanks and Poison Jam all of whom want to take over the GG's territory and make it their own. Along the way Beat must also avoid being caught and apprehended by the police and their leader, Captain Onishima.

Jet Set Radio Future[]

In the sequel, Jet Set Radio Future, Beat is shown as a somewhat arrogant rudie who, whilst not the leader of the GGs, believes with time he will become it. He is not unlocked from the start, but is the first GG to be recruited. Gum is not initially a fan of Beat in this title referring to him as a 'headphone wearing freak' who has been 'creeping into their territory' to Yoyo at the start of the game prior to Beat's recruitment. He also comes off as standoffish to Yoyo initially asking what the new GG member is looking at when approached and challenges him to a race for the GG's territory if he wins. Upon losing, Beat joins the GG crew and warns Yoyo to escape to the HQ as the cops are on their way.

Other appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Beat is considered the leader of the GG's in Jet Set Radio, but Jet Set Radio Future has Corn as the leader and Gum as the founder. Beat mentions it's only a matter of time before he is the leader which might be a reference to his original status.
  • Beat is the poster boy for Jet Set Radio appearing on both covers of the games and being the character with the most cameos from the series.
  • Despite being the poster boy, Beat is replaced by Yoyo as the starting GG in Jet Set Radio Future. Instead, Beat is the very first recruitable GG (making him the fourth playable character after Yoyo, Gum and Corn).
  • The Kanji on his shirt reads ビ-ト which translates to his name in Japanese ビ-(Bii) ト(To)
  • Beat was to feature in the cancelled mobile game Sega Blast Heroes alongside Gum, Alex Kidd, Amigo, Sakura Shinguji, Selvaria Bles, Ulala, Tom-Tom and others.
