Baku Baku Animal (ばくばくアニマル Baku Baku Animaru?) is a falling block puzzle arcade game released by Sega for various consoles throughout 1995 and 1996.

Plot[]

In a distant kingdom, the Princess is demanding yet another new pet. The King and the Minister despair as she already has so many and the servants are struggling to keep up with feeding and managing them all.

They decide and agree to hosting a contest to employ a full-time Royal Zookeeper and sends the word out to the people of the land. Two young competitors, Polly and Gon, enter and compete against other competitors in order to become the Royal Zookeeper.

In the Game Gear and Master System versions, due to console limitations, Polly is the sole playable character.

Gameplay[]

Baku Baku Animal is a competitive two-player falling block puzzle game in which players compete to clear containers of blocks. Alongside this, there is a single player Story Mode with three difficulties. Players need to link together one or more food blocks before removing each connected block in one go with an animal block. By clearing these blocks on their screen, the player will fill up the opponent's screen. When a player's screen is completely full of blocks, they will lose.

There are four types of food blocks and animal blocks, including an additional fifth type not featured in the Arcade version:

  • Red carrot blocks which can only be cleared by rabbits.
  • Blue bone blocks which can only be cleared by dogs.
  • Yellow banana blocks which can only be cleared by monkeys.
  • Green bamboo blocks which can only be cleared by pandas.
  • Purple cheese blocks which can only be cleared by mice.

In addition to these, there are also BB Coins, which clear out every copy of whatever blocks it lands on.

Trivia[]

  • The Windows version was included in the Sonic & Garfield Pack as a bonus feature, and in the Sega Family Fun Pak.
  • The Windows version is dedicated as Sega's first ever Network compatible PC game.
  • A Sega NetLink compatible version of the game was announced, but never released.
  • Horses, which ate carrots, were originally planned to be in the final game, but were scrapped since they overlapped with the rabbits. The pandas were also once considered to be changed in overseas releases, but this was also scrapped.[1]
  • A white label 12-inch EP consisting entirely of dance tracks using sound effects from Baku Baku Animal, recorded by The Dream Team and Timebase for the Suburban Base label, was circulated to disc jockeys in 1996.
