History[]
Valkyria Chronicles 3[]
During the events of the second Europan War, Avan was a part of Mellvere's Town Watch. He spotted an enormous tank approaching the town, and realising that he and his civilian Town Watch would not be able to repel it, he rushed to find some Gallian soldiers to help. Stumbling across Kurt Irving and Squad 422, Avan begged Kurt for help protecting his home town. Kurt, not wishing to leave the civilians to their fate attempted to persuade the regular army to help but was informed that the Squad 422 should be the ones to go.
Avan lead the squad back to Mellvere which was under siege by Calamity Raven's Lydia Agthe and her Echidna tank which plowed through the houses of Mellvere and launched a cannon at the clock tower for fun. Furious, Avan charged forward at Lydia, picking up a gun and threatening to stop her, forcing Kurt to chase him and instruct him to help them take the bases to limit the Echidna's movements and ammo supply. Avan agreed and through team work they force Lydia to retreat as she did not want to break the tank in such a meaningless battle, swearing revenge against the Nameless for their interference.
After Mellvere is safe, Avan praises Squad 422, stating the army is incredible, but is corrected by Riela Marcellis that they are not from the regular army. Avan asks if they are in the Militia, but Gusurg tells him that's not right either. Avan reveals his brother, Leon Hardins, is in the Militia and asks if they know him. Kurt states they usually work alone, but Avan asks him that if they meet Leon to let him know that his Avan is fine and asks them to pass on "Don't give up" to him. Kurt asks if Avan is worried about Leon, but Avan tells him his brother is the best so he's sure he's fine. Riela asks if the people of Mellvere will be okay with rebuilding but Avan reassures her, quoting from Leon's notes of advice.
Later, when Squad 422 return to Mellvere they see the town has been restored by the townsfolk. Avan reintroduces himself and asks if they remember him. Kurt lets Avan know they managed to meet Leon and fought alongside him. Avan asks how he is doing and isn't he incredible, and Kurt agreed. Excitedly, Avan asks if his brother talked about him, and Kurt said Leon laughed when they told him that he was full of spirit, which causes Avan to smile. Suddenly a rumbling noise is heart, as Gallian troops begin to hunt down Squad 422.
Confused, Avan asks why the Nameless are fighting with the regular army, and Kurt admits that the Gallian Military has marked them as wanted criminals. Avan asks how that is possible, as the Nameless are allies who helped Mellvere in their time of need, but Kurt states that for whatever reason they are now being hunted. Kurt tells Avan to take refuge, and he has no need to fight the Gallian military. Avan agrees and takes cover.
After the battle Avan is still confused and asking why the Gallians aren't fighting the Imperials. He asks Kurt why they couldn't just stand firm and tell his fellow Gallians the truth, but Kurt states that it isn't that simple and he must clear Squad 422's name first to make the Gallian Army realise the real truth. Kurt states there may be a time when Avan himself finds himself on the battlefield and should seek out the real truth. Avan ponders these words, and points out that Squad 422 were the ones who came to save his people, and asks if that was all real. Kurt agrees, and Avan responds with a quote from his brother "When times are troubled, a man's true spirit shows.". Avan asks what they plan to do next, and wishes them luck on their next mission, hoping to someday see them again.
Valkyria Chronicles II[]
Two years later Avan is approached whilst at work in Mellvere by Hubert Brixham, a teacher at Lanseal Military Academy who is seeking him out. Avan announces himself, and is handed a letter by Brixham who apologises for being the bearer of bad news. Leon Hardins, Avan's brother, has died. Shocked, Avan asks for details, but is told that due to the nature of his death is classified to Civilians such as Avan. Avan refuses to believe Leon is dead without some sort of proof, and decides that he will enrol in the school to find out the truth about his brother's fate.
Rebels arrive, forcing Avan to rally his fellow workers to help defend the town. Once the rebellious soldiers have been dispatched, Brixham warns him that he is free to attempt the entrance exam but they do not just let anyone into Lanseal. Avan, more determined then ever takes the long train ride to the academy, with uniform in hand and steels himself to pass the written and practical exam.
Upon arriving, he quickly makes friends with Cosette Coalhearth, a friendly blonde girl with dreams of becoming a doctor, and butts heads with Zeri, an uppity Darcsen who refers to Avan and Cosette as clowns. He is placed into a team with both of them for the practical exam, and through some makeshift team work they manage to secure a base together, passing the exam. To Avan's surprise, he ends up in Class G. The same class as Cosette and Zeri, and through Cosette's actions in response to her annoyance at Julianna Everhart, Avan ends up getting volunteered as Class Chair of Class G.
As Avan gets used to practicing drills, the academy bells start ringing, indicating an attack. He, Zeri and Cosette are surprised to find out that due to this being an internal battle against the rebel army, the militia can not be summoned. As class chair, command of the battlefield lands on Avan's shoulders.
