Not to be confused with Death Adder from Golden Axe.

Adder is the main antagonist of the Mushiking series.

Appearance[]

Adder is a sinister looking elderly grey haired man who has slicked back hair, a beard and horseshoe moustache. He has a scar over his left eye, is clad in a dark blue robe with a piece of rope for his belt. He carries with him a twisted branch that he uses as a staff to use magic. Like Popo, he is small enough to ride on the back of a beetle.

History[]

Adder was expelled from the forest by the fairy folk. He was overcome with anger for his expulsion from his home, and became obsessed with seeking vengeance.

He came across some foreign beetles brought from overseas to the outskirts of the forest by mankind and began to experiment on them in hopes to exact his revenge upon those who had forced him from what he believed to be rightfully his. Adder returned to the forest with these beetles, having modified them to listen to his every order, and began his assault on his former home, hoping to claim the forest for himself.

After one of these modified beetles was defeated by Mushking, it pleaded for forgiveness to Adder, but he cast it aside calling it a weak and useless creature. To Adder's surprise a young forest fairy that he recognised, Popo, appeared before him and demanded to know if he was the one behind controlling these insects. Adder, seeing Popo as nothing but a child, simply told him to go home and stay out of his way, but Popo refused and so Adder sent yet more beetles after him. Mushiking bravely protected Popo from these beetles and the young fairy pleaded for Adder to stop destroying the forest. Adder snapped that everyone would pay for expelling him, determined to show those who had shunned him that the forest belonged to him, but Popo states that the forest isn't owned by anyone and it's for everyone. Adder simply tells Popo to be quiet, and that he doesn't stand a chance against him, sicking yet another beetle minion upon him.

Popo manages to convince the forests beetles to fight for him, causing Adder's modified beetles to lose. As they do, they plead for Adder to not alter their body anymore. Popo demands to know what Adder did to the beetles. Adder reveals he's performed a few experiments on them in order to make them obey, and Popo is disgusted, stating they're friends, not servants. Adder screams at Popo to shut up and sends yet another modified beetle on him, but it's defeated by the native insects. Popo tells Adder he has no more insects and he should give up. Adder smiles and reveals that the reason the forest is full of alien insects and is being destroyed is because of man. He reveals man will soon arrive, more foreign insects will invade and the peaceful forest was now a thing of the past before disappearing with magic before Popo's eyes.

Adder retreats to his lair, a spooky tree with a face like opening and continues his experiments on the beetles. To his surprise Popo arrives, having tracked him down and defeated his guard beetles. Adder sends his latest experiments after Popo, but they once again lose. Adder attempts to flee using teleportation magic, but Popo tackles him to the ground, pulling his staff from his hands and shattering it against the hard tree trunk floor. With no way to escape, Adder is placed in a cage by Popo to prevent him causing further damage.

However, Adder had another trick up his sleeve, and using a beetle controlling flute, forced a nearby beetle to break the cage open, allowing him to escape.
